Tim Wakefield in 1995 was released by the Pirates and picked up by the Redsox. In his first 17 starts he went 14-1, with a 1.65 ERA. Finished the year at 16-8, leading them to a division title. He is 2nd in Sox history in games pitched with 590, pitching out of the bullpen and as a starter. RIP.

Dwight Evans receives his 1981 Gold Glove at Fenway in June of 1982. 1981 was a strike shortened season, Evans led the AL in HR’s 22, Walks 85, OPS .937 and WAR 6.7, while hitting .296, with a .415 OBP. He was a AS and came in 3rd for MVP, while winning his 4th of 8 GG’s.

George Scott describes the depth of the water to Joe Foy and Reggie Smith, after the June 1968 game at Fenway ended early with heavy rains. That season Foy hit .225 with 10 HR’s and a .662 OPS. Scott had a really rough season hitting .171 with a .473 OPS. Smith hit .265 with 15 HR’s and a .772 OPS.

The Red Sox signed Juan Beniquez an undrafted FA out of Puerto Rico in 1968. He played parts of 4 seasons with the Sox, originally a Shortstop, they moved him to the OF. In his time with the Sox he hit .274, with 8 HR’s and a .692 OPS. In Dec 1975 he was traded to the Rangers for Ferguson Jenkins.

Pitcher Dick Ellsworth was acquired by the Red Sox from the Phillies in Dec 1967. In 1968 he was 16-7 with a 3.03 ERA, then in 69 he appeared in 2 games, when he was involved in a 6 player trade with the Indians that brought Sonny Siebert to the Sox. His son Steve was the Sox 1st rd pick in 1981.

Happy Heavenly Birthday to George Metkovich, who passed away at the age of 74 in 1995. Metkovich began his career with the Sox, playing for them from 1943-46. A 1st baseman & OF’er, he appeared in 436 Games for Boston, hitting .260, with 23 HR’s and a .691 OPS.

Red Sox Leftfielder Carl Yastrzemski and Celtics Player/Coach Bill Russell share a laugh at the Harvard Club, after Russell was presented a Grecian urn for being named Sports Illustrated “Sportsman of the Year”. Russell was the 1st NBA player to win the award, and Yaz won it the yr prior in 1967.

The Red Sox acquired Utility Infielder John Kennedy from the Brewers for cash in June 1970. He played 5 seasons for the Sox, with 1971 being his best, in 76 Games he hit .276, with 5 HR’s and a .731 OPS. Overall he hit .243, with 13 HR’s and a .658 OPS. He was released by the Sox in Oct 1974.

On this date in 2013 the Red Sox embarrass the Yankees in game 3 of the ALDS, winning 16-1 at Yankee Stadium. Nathan Eovaldi picks up the win going 7 innings and allowing 1 run. But the star of the game is Brock Holt as he becomes the 1st player to hit for the Cycle in Postseason History.

On this date in 2013 the Red Sox advance to the ALCS, with a 3-1 win over the Rays, in Game 4 of the ALDS. Koji Uehara pitches a perfect 1.1 innings for the Save. That Postseason Koji appeared in 13 games and Saved 7, with a 0.66 ERA and a 0.51 WHIP.

Happy 70th Birthday to Pitcher Jerry Reed, who the Red Sox signed in May 1990, after he was released by the Mariners. He appeared in 29 games for the Sox, going 2-1, with a 4.80 ERA and 2 Saves. The Sox released him in August 1990, which marked the end of his 9 year career.

Happy 83rd Birthday to Pitcher Bill Landis, who the Red Sox selected from the A’s in the November 1966 Rule 5 Draft. He pitched for the Sox from 1967-69, appearing in 101 Games, 7 Starts and going 9-8, with a 4.50 ERA and 4 Saves. After spending 1970 in the Minors he was traded to the Cardinals.

On this date in 1967 Ken Brett of the Red Sox becomes the youngest player to ever pitch in the WS. The just turned 19 yr old throws a scoreless 8th inning in a 6-0 loss. He spent the year in Single A and Double A, going 14-11, with a 1.95 ERA, and appeared in 1 game for the Sox before the WS.
