"Mask until you don't have to anymore" kind of fell apart when a huge number of people decided to sabotage it.

Instead of getting to that point a lot of people just agreed to pretend that we had, and now here we are.

Some Philosopher comes up with a specific piece of terminology to represent a complicated phenomena, and everyone just goes "I'll use that to mean when I spill soup on my shirt because I'm trying to watch TV from a recliner while I eat it!"
