I think it's also what they can get away with without having to enact any reforms. An economy based on pure resource extraction is pretty straightforward, and any pivot away from that requires some form of political reforms

I think it's useful because someone like Polanski gets designated as a naive idealist and someone like, say, Shabana Mahmood as a hard-nosed realist, and conclusions on what makes them tick are downstream of those designations

I am not a massive fan of Polanski, but I don't think he is any less shallow or incoherent than Starmer or anyone else prominent in the government. The government's line on immigration in particular is significantly more shallow and vacuous than anything Polanski says

I have said this before, but the Tories have so thoroughly memed themselves into believing that left-wing politics just about identity and nothing else that they think parading random young people for the cameras will bring in more young people. Katie Lam is young so they just assume that's enough

But that's what I'm saying. She hates those teachers who told she was crap because it strikes at the heart of her self-image, ie that she is very smart. It's why she clings to that stupid Stanford lie, because she can't accept the teachers might have been right
