Youtube keeps giving me ads for hotel booking websites. Dude less than 3 months ago I spent several grand on a holiday in Sardinia, I'm not booking any trips this side of spring

But they never had time to do anything in government, remember?
camtreblig.bsky.social
I mean, wasn’t it only a month ago that you had all the “well we're all going to have to pay a bit more, business has become addicted to cheap foreign labour” guff coming from the government? These are not serious people

*incredibly smugly* "What the left doesn't understand is that high immigration is more unpopular than inflation"
camtreblig.bsky.social
Dracula is the account of the racial persecution and eventual murder of an immigrant that did nothing but move to the another country and seduce his estate agent's girlfriend. The story is told by unreliable narrators trying to justify their actions

Tell me your most unhinged literary opinion, as a little treat

“The government’s new immigration restrictions will sort everything out any day now” could be the title of a comprehensive history of post-GFC British politics

Read my two letters to the #UK:
1. Protests: I call for a review of the legal framework and the reconsideration of provisions in the Crime & Policing Bill that could restrict freedom of assembly.
2. Trans people: I warn against exclusion&zero-sum approaches

"smacking didn't do me any harm"

Oh so the bed-wetting, heavy drinking, hair-trigger temper and regular dominatrix visits are just a coincidence?

Superficially, Lam (and Badenoch, for that matter) seems like the kind of person who should be the face of the party. But Tories don't want to deal with the reasons why she is so unsuited to the role
camtreblig.bsky.social
I have said this before, but the Tories have so thoroughly memed themselves into believing that left-wing politics just about identity and nothing else that they think parading random young people for the cameras will bring in more young people. Katie Lam is young so they just assume that's enough
camtreblig.bsky.social
The problem is that there isn't a way of looking at the problem that doesn't lead back to "page one rewrite of the local government funding model", which is something the current government is not going to go for
camtreblig.bsky.social
I was recently reading about the Bostock decision in the US and it's quite striking that even a MAGA chud like Neil Gorsuch is able to get this
camtreblig.bsky.social
I'm not saying she's expressing pity, I'm saying she feels contempt for them. She looks down on them. It's very different to how she thinks about the teachers, who she has a strong loathing for
camtreblig.bsky.social
Wondering if a “see it, say it, sorted” joke is going to get me cancelled
camtreblig.bsky.social
And she does complain about her fellow students but it's in a “those poor brainless fools” way, like they are too stupid and worthless to be worth any of her time.

She appears to feel the same way about the 80% of the electorate who aren't voting Tory
camtreblig.bsky.social
But that's what I'm saying. She hates those teachers who told she was crap because it strikes at the heart of her self-image, ie that she is very smart. It's why she clings to that stupid Stanford lie, because she can't accept the teachers might have been right
camtreblig.bsky.social
I'm not a psychologist, but it seems clear to me that Kemi’s formative experiences were being told she was clever (and to a slightly lesser extent brave).

That's why the great villains of her youth aren't lefty students but the teachers who gave her bad grades and she thinks didn't push her enough
camtreblig.bsky.social
Tbf those aren’t mutually exclusive. If you told me he was bullied viciously when he was younger and then became a vicious bully in his teens, I'd buy that
camtreblig.bsky.social
Yeah there is definitely a type of politician who was bullied/wasn't cool at school and is clearly NOT over it. Raab definitely fits that archetype.

I really don't think Kemi does though
camtreblig.bsky.social
It's possible that happened, but I don't think that explains her character. She is not someone who, deep down, is desperate to be liked.

The one who clearly is not over the fact they weren't one of the cool kids at school is Liz Truss
camtreblig.bsky.social
Considering how much she talks about her university experience, I'm almost certain that someone at university called her a brave and/or original thinker for simply being openly conservative, and she has internalised that to an alarming degree
camtreblig.bsky.social
29% for Thatcher is very concerning, as it means 71% of the country is wrong
camtreblig.bsky.social
Her lack of self-awareness is honestly phenomenal. No other human being in history has had such a gap between their self-image and reality.

Being able to witness it in real time is how I imagine people who watched Tonya Harding do a triple axel live must have felt
camtreblig.bsky.social
I don't know why, but her starting that off with “I wasn't born yesterday” just makes it so much funnier
