Remind me to read that tomorrow, it’s 1AM here

That’s not even a brag, by the way. RE games grade you when you beat the game and will scoff at you for not beating the game in, like, two hours
batariangal.bsky.social
Well, that’s harsh
A results screen from Resident Evil 3 that reads

Time played - 5 hours, 48 minutes, 56 seconds

Number of Saves - 33

Grade - F
batariangal.bsky.social
Hell, even that understates the disparity. A week for the Witcher would require me playing nonstop at every waking moment. Whereas I could probably beat multiple Resident Evils over a two day period and still have time to do other things
batariangal.bsky.social
If I fancy playing Witcher 3 again, that’s at least the next week of my free time taken up (and I have a *lot* of free time). If I fancy playing a Resident Evil again, that’s a couple of days at most.

Part of the argument why devs don’t do more involved choices is because most people don’t replay games, so you don’t want them to miss the good stuff. But people are more likely to replay something if it’s not a 30+ hour time commitment
batariangal.bsky.social
Genuinely, I think the game that truly cracks choices in video games will owe more to Resident Evil than contemporary RPGs
batariangal.bsky.social
(But an additional problem is that choice systems are typically associated with RPGs, a genre where a 30 hour run time is considered a bit short. Which means you have to produce an insane amount of content most people won’t see to create satisfying permutations)

Disco Elysium, whilst not a game that branches that much, would probably have been a lot less ambitious in terms of extra dialogue if it had been made with full voice acting, instead of adding voice acting once it was a proven success
batariangal.bsky.social
I think the expectation of complete voice acting, in particular, is a big problem that puts a much harder limit on how many story branches you can feasibly do.

That was right at the end of the article, so her removal had the amusing effect of meaning the article now ends on this
Another extract from the article, this one still in the published article, that reads: At a fringe event in Manchester one member sought to bring some hope, boasting that Keele University Conservative Society now had its biggest membership in a decade. "We now have 11 members," he said.
batariangal.bsky.social
Okay, she’s in the archive version. Won’t link or name her as she clearly asked to be removed, she’s basically just a kid and, frankly, this does not sound like someone who’ll still be a Tory in five years
An excerpt from the archived article with the woman’s name blacked out. It reads: Badenoch's leadership is one of the reasons [name], a 19-year-old politics student at Durham University, is a party member. She grew up in a Conservative household in north Wales and feels passionately about women's involvement in politics.

"I think it's great we have a female leader," she said. "I'm a very strong women's rights advocate. More women should be visible in the Conservative Party. I think now more than ever we need more women in politics."

She added: "I hope we have many more female leaders to come. Hopefully one day it'll be me - you never know."

She's the 11th member of Keele University Conservative Society

I didn’t really meet anyone off-putting or anything, it was just a general vibe that I was in the wrong place. I didn’t do that much socialising, in truth, as I’d come with my uni Tory society
batariangal.bsky.social
Particularly Theresa May, in her closing speech in 2016, talking about “left wing human rights lawyers” harassing soldiers. I didn’t understand the context behind that at the time, but instinctively it didn’t sit right with me and was a bit of a “are we the baddies?” moment
batariangal.bsky.social
Though, frankly, attending that was the first domino in getting me out of my Tory phase
batariangal.bsky.social
Anyway, as someone who did attend a Tory conference at around this age, I don’t have a right to judge these people

mind you if an actual robotic lifeform ever came about i'm sure it would be absolutely pissed that we alleged that a toaster that can lie to you is comparable to it
batariangal.bsky.social
Had a skim through this and there’s an odd thing going on here where the woman on the right doesn’t show up in the article at all? She’s not even in the header of the article itself?

Every now and again I’ll randomly remember when Xbox added Skate 2 to its backward compatibility list and, I think literally on the same day, EA announced they were taking the servers down for it
An Always Sunny in Philadelphia scene in which one character is trying to rescue another, who is dangling from the rescuer’s hand, from falling. The rescuer is saying “I got you, brother”. Frank, played by Danny De Vito, then comes in with a piece of wood to knock the dangling character off, whilst saying “oh, no, you don’t” to the rescuer.

Imposed over the face of the dangling character is the Skate 2 box art, imposed over the face of the rescuer is the Xbox logo, and imposed over the face of Frank is the EA logo.

Maybe it’s the Total War player in me but I really don’t mind loading screens
batariangal.bsky.social
Yeah, especially in the age of the SSD. Seamless loading felt like something more worth striding for when loading screens were frequently measured in minutes rather than seconds
batariangal.bsky.social
When you’re in Dungeon C, the game is still tracking at least some of the loot you left on the ground in Dungeons A and B. Those dungeons being separate maps, separated from the overworld by a loading screen, would make it easier for the game to refresh and declutter
batariangal.bsky.social
BL4 obviously badly optimised, particularly at launch where it’d slow down after an hour, but at its core it’s using a mostly seamless open world style that’s used in games that track far fewer variables than Borderlands does.
