Yeah, especially in the age of the SSD. Seamless loading felt like something more worth striding for when loading screens were frequently measured in minutes rather than seconds

When you’re in Dungeon C, the game is still tracking at least some of the loot you left on the ground in Dungeons A and B. Those dungeons being separate maps, separated from the overworld by a loading screen, would make it easier for the game to refresh and declutter

BL4 obviously badly optimised, particularly at launch where it’d slow down after an hour, but at its core it’s using a mostly seamless open world style that’s used in games that track far fewer variables than Borderlands does.

Random hot take that should have occurred to me sooner: Borderlands 4 having messy performance (improved since launch, but not fixed) is a good example of why people who moan about loading screens for interiors in Bethesda games are idi-misguided

I do think a key to its longevity is it’s the only price comparison website to come up with a memorable ad campaign that isn’t just a repetitive song that burrows itself into your brain

To answer the first question, the premise of the initial advert was clearing up confusion between “compare the market” and Alexsandr’s own website “compare the meerkat”. Over time he just morphed into the company mascot

Fun fact: there will be people sitting their GCSEs later this year who were not born when the Compare the Meerkat advertising campaign started running

Further context: The still-ongoing campaign is for the British insurance comparison website “comparethemarket.com”. The initial adverts featured a CGI Russian meerkat Aleksandr Orlov, who advised viewers not to mix up his fictional website, comparethemeerkat.com, with compare the market. Eventually, this premise was dropped from the adverts, but Aleksandr was retained as a company mascot and features in their adverts to this day
