Every now and again I’ll randomly remember when Xbox added Skate 2 to its backward compatibility list and, I think literally on the same day, EA announced they were taking the servers down for it
An Always Sunny in Philadelphia scene in which one character is trying to rescue another, who is dangling from the rescuer’s hand, from falling. The rescuer is saying “I got you, brother”. Frank, played by Danny De Vito, then comes in with a piece of wood to knock the dangling character off, whilst saying “oh, no, you don’t” to the rescuer.

Imposed over the face of the dangling character is the Skate 2 box art, imposed over the face of the rescuer is the Xbox logo, and imposed over the face of Frank is the EA logo.

Maybe it’s the Total War player in me but I really don’t mind loading screens
batariangal.bsky.social
Yeah, especially in the age of the SSD. Seamless loading felt like something more worth striding for when loading screens were frequently measured in minutes rather than seconds
batariangal.bsky.social
When you’re in Dungeon C, the game is still tracking at least some of the loot you left on the ground in Dungeons A and B. Those dungeons being separate maps, separated from the overworld by a loading screen, would make it easier for the game to refresh and declutter

BL4 obviously badly optimised, particularly at launch where it’d slow down after an hour, but at its core it’s using a mostly seamless open world style that’s used in games that track far fewer variables than Borderlands does.
batariangal.bsky.social
Random hot take that should have occurred to me sooner: Borderlands 4 having messy performance (improved since launch, but not fixed) is a good example of why people who moan about loading screens for interiors in Bethesda games are idi-misguided

I responded in a much more restrained way than just swearing at them, but their response was to claim it wasn’t in anyway innovative because it has towers that reveal the map? The entire bloody climbing system was completely different to anything that came before it
batariangal.bsky.social
As an open world hater, seeing someone on Reddit claim Breath of the Wild is a typical Ubisoft formula game has irritated me to no end. No it bloody isn’t, what the fuck are you talking about?
batariangal.bsky.social
Oh, they’re undeniably beatable. Which makes the fact Labour are on course to lose to them so depressing
batariangal.bsky.social
It does look like that, lmao, but think it’s just the compression. Sorry anyway

I like HotD 🤷‍♀️

Apart from that, Mrs Lincoln, how was the theatre?
batariangal.bsky.social
Like, were it not for Reform leading the pack, I wouldn't necessarily see this kind of split as a bad thing

Whilst this obviously shows FPTP is creaking at the seams, it is, in some respects, healthy for a multi-party democracy that voters don't feel the need to strongly coalesce around two parties four years out from an election

Fun fact: today we are further from the first meerkat ad than Cleopatra was from the building of the pyramids
batariangal.bsky.social
I do think a key to its longevity is it’s the only price comparison website to come up with a memorable ad campaign that isn’t just a repetitive song that burrows itself into your brain
batariangal.bsky.social
To answer the first question, the premise of the initial advert was clearing up confusion between “compare the market” and Alexsandr’s own website “compare the meerkat”. Over time he just morphed into the company mascot

IIIIIIII vow to thee, my country, all earthly things above…

The meerkat was one of the more bizarre things to witness in the UK. Just the layers of him.

Ah ok it's another one of those puppet commercials British people love

Why is it a meerkat?

Why is he an exiled Russian noble?

What is going on?

Fun fact, there are people who just started sixth form, etc.
batariangal.bsky.social
Fun fact: there will be people sitting their GCSEs later this year who were not born when the Compare the Meerkat advertising campaign started running
A screenshot infobox from the Wikipedia article for the Compare the Meerkat advertising campaign. Highlighted in a red box is the campaign’s release date: 5th January 2009.

Further context: The still-ongoing campaign is for the British insurance comparison website “comparethemarket.com”. The initial adverts featured a CGI Russian meerkat Aleksandr Orlov, who advised viewers not to mix up his fictional website, comparethemeerkat.com, with compare the market. Eventually, this premise was dropped from the adverts, but Aleksandr was retained as a company mascot and features in their adverts to this day

This is my vote too. I’ve only seen the film once when I was too young to really appreciate it, and haven’t got around to watching it again, but the trailer is just sublime and really unique

Some recency bias since we’re going through the Cohens filmography along with Blank Check, but I remember being OBSESSED with the trailer for A Serious Man when it came out

People's attraction to Shiny well outpaces any of their stated ideas or demands. Everyone who posted that meme about paying more for worse games is apoplectic when a new game costs $70

TBH I think Dunking is perfectly approriate for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, provided we also Egg them on.
