Well they want to clear the backlog without spending absolutely any more money on the justice system, because Starmer and Reeves are cowards who won't raise taxes to fund the better services they promised. So they're looking for other ways to save money.

I do try not to get too alarmist but I do have an increasing concern about the possibility of a major collapse in institutional legitimacy (government, courts, media) arising from what is a pretty undeniable shift on their part to the far right positions on most social issues

pretty much every long-time Labour volunteer I know is seriously considering whether to vote Green or Lib Dem.
It is amazingly horrifying in how little Labour leaders have zero, even negative faith in the values that their party's supposed to stand for. I have the deepest sympathies for the party ground floor workers and supporters who're disgusted by this grotesque betrayal of their values. It's despairing.

Good to see HMT has finally relented on the tourist tax. Important that mayors are allowed to keep all of the income and choose how to spend it without central interference. And that it's the beginning of fiscal devolution not the end.
