Re-upping this. Trying to explain rights to the median Brit is like trying to explain feminism to someone from the 16th century. The fundamental building blocks and frame of reference just aren't there
We are just, in many ways, a people that the 20th century didn’t happen to. We‘ve never really slid into overt tyranny, we haven’t faced a mainland invasion for over two centuries, and there hasn’t been a successful one for over three. There has been little soil for respect for rights to grow

triple the london tourist tax but only for tourists who walk sloooowly through soho gawking at the occasional sign advertising big booby ladies while you’re trying to get a seat at the french house next to a 900 year old man hacking his guts up next to 3 empty glasses of riesling

Well they want to clear the backlog without spending absolutely any more money on the justice system, because Starmer and Reeves are cowards who won't raise taxes to fund the better services they promised. So they're looking for other ways to save money.

I do try not to get too alarmist but I do have an increasing concern about the possibility of a major collapse in institutional legitimacy (government, courts, media) arising from what is a pretty undeniable shift on their part to the far right positions on most social issues

The partition of Camden is coming...
pretty much every long-time Labour volunteer I know is seriously considering whether to vote Green or Lib Dem.
It is amazingly horrifying in how little Labour leaders have zero, even negative faith in the values that their party's supposed to stand for. I have the deepest sympathies for the party ground floor workers and supporters who're disgusted by this grotesque betrayal of their values. It's despairing.

Britain, the island where:

The Labour Party supports removing fundamental rights from all criminal defendants

Lord Pompous Name of Random Place upon Tweed is like, we must bring back the top hat rule in the House of Commons, and we should protect the jury trial system.
And the best chance of stopping this is probably the House of Lords

NEW: Plans are underway for a tourist levy to supercharge London's economy. It could raise *millions* to fund major improvements in our city.

London is the greatest city in the world, but there’s always more to do! A tourist levy would make it an even better place to live and visit for everyone.

Jesus christ when given a choice between funding this justice system properly or fascism OF COURSE this Labour government chooses fascism because they've chosen fascism almost every time in every area, but it's still depressing.

They really should have made a third film in the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy IMO.
If you were a despotic president, what movie would you force Hollywood to make? I want to see Quentin's Star Trek movie or maybe Kill Bill Vol 3.

Let me get this straight: there is a cut in fuel duty, a new charge on electric vehicles, and a cut in support for people buying electric bikes
When can you declare an emergency over?

The 5p “emergency” petrol tax cut was introduced in March 2022, to offset a spike in prices

They are now about 30p down on that month, & about 50p down on the absolute peak

Good to see HMT has finally relented on the tourist tax. Important that mayors are allowed to keep all of the income and choose how to spend it without central interference. And that it's the beginning of fiscal devolution not the end.

Sometimes wonder if what the UK needs is a thinktank that doesn't do any new research, it just repeats obviously true statements that people try to ignore because they're inconvenient.
