I cannot stress how important it is that the issue of police records is dealt with and not brushed under the carpet as it has been for decades. The fact that they aren't Public Records is an accident of history, but the impact of this lack of regulatory control is immense.

Why aren’t Police Records in England & Wales covered by the Public Records Act? We've been campaigning on this since 2012 - blog for more info:

hey colleagues, want to feel old? 18 year olds starting university this year are

-younger than YouTube and Twitter
-younger than the song “Bad Day”
-and never knew Pluto as a planet

(don’t worry tho, to make us all feel better about it they dress like it’s 2003)

Happy 350th birthday to the Royal Observatory, Greenwich! the foundation stone was laid at 3:14 pm on 10 August 1675 (OS). We know because the astronomer there, John Flamsteed, drew up a horoscope. See more here teleskopos.wordpress.com/2011/08/10/a... #histSTM #histsci

New image processing techniques “refreshed” older Hubble data showing a portion of the Eagle Nebula. This structure is 9.5 light-years tall and 7,000 light-years distant from Earth, and is one of many nebulas in the Milky Way.

Credit: ESA/Hubble & NASA. 🔭 🧪
A very vertical image of a tall, thin portion of a nebula that appears to stand like a tree. The top is made up of large brown and blue pale clouds and dust that look like voluminous hair. To the right of the clouds is a dark rugged shape, surrounded by a bright red light. Below the clouds is a dark stem, made of tendrils of dust, wrapping around themselves to the bottom of the image, where the tendrils widen and expand like a tornado-like dust cloud. The background has several stars of different colors and sizes, and the shade of the background changes from light blue at top to dark red at the bottom.

something I've learned by covering online archives and libraries is that many valuable, free, online resources are maintained by extremely small teams, maybe one volunteer. Asking them to deal with scrapers that behave like DDoS attacks is unrealistic www.404media.co/ai-scraping-...

Great recs from @mattseybold.bsky.social on resisting technofeudal education: prioritize print, practice ungrading, "Luddify" the classroom; de-mobilize computer infrastructure (root technology in social place!); faculty governance over SaaS subscriptions; instructor choice re: ed-tech

A pair of hands holds pencils and appears to simultaneously draw the word "Escher" in a stylized, calligraphic font on a white sheet of paper, set against a patterned background of pink and purple Escher-inspired motifs. Text says: Picture of the day. Mind-bending artist M. C. Escher was born on this date in 1898. This community-contributed tribute to Escher's Drawing Hands is today's Picture of the Day on Wikimedia Commons.

This splendid image, released on 23 May 2024 as part of Euclid's Early Release Observations (ERO), shows Messier 78 (the central and brightest region), a nursery of star formation 1,300 ly away in the constellation of Orion.

Enjoy!

The image shows a “filamentary orange veil” covering a bright star-forming region, with a dark background dotted with stars and galaxies of various sizes, from small bright points to star-like shapes. The foreground veil extends from the upper left to the lower right, with an appearance reminiscent of a seahorse. Bright stars illuminate the seahorse’s “eye” and “chest” regions with purple light, while in the “tail” there are three bright spots arranged like a traffic light.
