Your institutions seem paralysed in the face of Trump. What is wrong with the US that it has capitulated to a tyrant so easily?

I booked a private vaccination even though I'm eligible for the NHS one, which is not targetting the latest variants - the vulnerable are being given an inferior jab 😒

Very sad to hear of the death of the charming Sir John Gurdon, Master of Magdalene College, Cambridge, who in 2001 conferred an honorary fellowship on Nelson Mandela. At Eton, Gurdon was told he’d never make a scientist. He went on to win the Nobel Prize for physiology.

On tonight’s Unspun World on BBC Two I talk to the great Steve Rosenberg about what it’s really like to be the BBC Russia editor — how do ordinary Russians react to him? Is he in danger? What’s going to happen there? Unmissable!

This is not to say that I am blind to the many problems that can be accelerated through social media, or to the fact that in a world without proper media literacy, social media can be weaponised to an extreme degree. These are facts of contemporary history.

I agree. Social media has enabled me to interact with many kind and knowledgeable people throughout the world. The exchange of ideas which it has facilitated has been wonderful.

But when discussing the role of social media it is important to distinguish between the benefits of the medium itself & the content that is transmitted through it. Social media can be - & is repeatedly - abused because humans are naïve & trusting. Those qualities can also lead to good things. (3/n)

I have met people who have become dear friends, I have been given opportunities to write articles, I have learned medieval palaeography, I have learned about books, & I have heard voices I would not otherwise have heard. Social media has shaped my life in many wonderful ways.
