Meet Rex! This big handsome fella came to Baltimore County Animal Services as a stray and initially when here he was quite scared in his kennel. He would bark or growl at the kennel door but was curious of other dogs, at some points he even appeared scared of reactive dogs including small ones. With consistent work here at the shelter we have seen improvements in his behavior and while he may still need some additional training this smart boy is eager to learn. He can now be seen at the front of his kennel with a loose and wiggly body, he accepts pets happily and overall is a really good boy. He is a hard puller and would benefit from a harness and some leash training but otherwise this chonky boy is ready to leave the shelter life behind. We are hoping a rescue, foster or adopter is able to step up and get him back into a home.

Duran - 5yo, male, altered, 10lbs

Meet Duran! He came to BARCS on 9/12 as a stray after a staff member found him. This little buddy is a bit nervous as he settles in. Once outside he loosens up and has some pep in his step. He cruises along happily for his walks!

On his formal handling eval- He was avoidant and disengaged, looking away, and did not approach three female handlers in the adoptions office. He tolerated head, ear and back pets, but was flinching and pulling back. For underbody touches, he was less comfortable, showing a lip lick and was stiff. With pets to the back and side, he did head whip and snap. When trying to be lifted, he again head whipped and air snapped.

With dogs however, Duran is tolerant but avoidant of greetings, and prefers gentle doggie friends.

Duran appears overall healthy, but could use a bath and haircut!

Duran is available for rescue pick up on 9/15 at 6pm.

Beautiful Calliope Deserves Her Chance to Shine🐾

Calliope is a beautiful 9-month-old, 50lb girl who is still learning her way in the world and looking for a safe place to grow and thrive. She came to us after her previous home reported concerns around children, particularly when food was involved. For this reason, Calliope will need a child-free home where she can feel comfortable and set up for success.

She was said to have lived with a cat, though she occasionally gave chase, so a cat-free home may be the best fit. When meeting dogs through a fence, Calliope seemed to do well with males but was nervous around vocal females. If her future family has dogs, we recommend slow and structured introductions to help her feel safe and build positive relationships.

At the shelter, Calliope has shown us just how smart she is. She already knows “sit” and walks nicely on a leash. She isn’t a big fan of restraint, so her future vet will want to move gently and thoughtfully with her. With continued training and patience, Calliope has so much potential to blossom. She will benefit from a rescue that can help her build confidence, reinforce her manners, and work through the possessive tendencies she displayed in her previous home.

This sweet, young pup just needs the right environment to shine. Calliope is ready for someone to see past her rough start and give her the guidance, structure, and love she needs. Could you be the one to help her on her journey?

Foster 🚨
Boosie is 10 years young, 20 lb, pup who was recently surrendered to the local shelter due to a lack of space in his previous home. We saved Boosie yesterday and sprung him from the shelter. NOW, he needs a foster home to recuperate, safely gain weight, and decompress.
In the shelter, Boosie was noted to be dog-friendly, though we are looking for a foster who will allow him time to decompress by following the two-week shutdown protocol (we are happy to guide you through this process).
🐶 Special Considerations
Boosie is currently very underweight (body condition score 2/9), so he will need:
🐾Separate feeding from other dogs
🐾Close monitoring around food
🐾Time to decompress
According to shelter notes, Boosie has lived with dogs, cats, and young children (ages 1, 4, and 5) and did well with all of them! However, due to his increased appetite, we are looking to place him in a home that is dog-savvy where all family members can respect his boundaries and understand his behavior around food.

Navy- 3 years old, male, 9 lbs

Navy was surrendered to our care as his owner was no longer able to care for him. He can be shy at times but we have seen him open up wonderfully. He is a delightful fella, affectionate, food motivated, and has been tolerant of pets. When tested with other dogs he showed polite behaviors with large and small breed dogs.

He can be tense with medical handling but has allowed for exams. Upon medical examinations, he presents ataxic in his hind end and we are not sure if this is orthopedic or neurologic so he will need further diagnostics. He also has some changes on his bloodwork and we are recommending further workup to rule out Addison's disease. A full medical summary can be provided upon request.

Hydra 7 is a petite, one-year-old pup with an irresistibly cute underbite and a heart that’s quietly longing for safety and love. Right now, the shelter is a scary place for her. She’s overwhelmed and unsure, but there's a gentle soul beneath the fear.

Hydra is nervous at first and may pancake at thresholds or when feeling leash pressure, but when given the chance to decompress in a quiet yard, she begins to relax, sniff around, and show interest in connecting.

She was understandably frightened during her medical intake exam and snapped when touched, but outside of that context, she's been tense yet tolerant of calm, non-medical handling. Hydra also has home notes on some barrier reactivity in her crate, especially toward strangers. Despite these challenges, it’s clear she wants to bond, she just needs the time, patience, and space to feel safe enough to do so.

Hydra prefers polite dog pals, and she would like to meet any potential roommates to ensure they are a good match.

Hydra 7 is available for immediate rescue pick up!

Buster Scruggs- 4 years old, unaltered male, 34 lbs

Animal control officers were alerted for a extremely think dog in a pen behind a lot. When they approached the dog, they could see his hips, ribs, spine and a severe fly infestation. He was also bleeding from his ears. There were 2 other dogs on the property, as well. Officers knocked on the trailer door but did not get a response. The property was in terrible condition with at least 10 dog crates scattered around, piles of feces and unclean water. Another dog was then found in a crate inside of the garage with no water, flooring or airflow. All of the dogs were removed from the property and transported to the shelter for further care.

Buster Scruggs was among these dogs and is now seeking a cozy home. On his initial medical exam, he presented with severe fly strike, a missing part of his ear, otitis, dermatitis and fleas. He is currently being treated and a full medical summary can be provided upon request.

When tested with other dogs, Buster was a but under-socialized. He was tense, avoidant and sniffed around the area but did participate in some play. He did do a bit of mounting which was hard to steer.
