lets say a wizard has cursed you with a lot of money. you are going to become permanently brain damaged simply by being in possession of so much money. the only way out of it is to spend a lot of money on something ridiculous and not at all useful

what would you buy to break the curse?

the classic "I can't do the kind of performing I used to get my Attention from.... WRESTLING TIME." move

the flatness freaks me out, but that's not a people problem lol

the logging truck is VERY valid. Being on a small wind-y country road with one of those when they have somewhere to be can be butt clench time. I haven't ever run into midwestern farmers to rate the level of Men Being Awful in comparison to my experiences around here so I can only believe you there.

I grew up in logger Oregon (also a woman), so I can't speak to the safety vibe difference except to acknowledge that our woods are full of death and darkness. Loggers are my uncles, so they feel comforting and familiar.

a misanthrope who uses the r-slur, oh no what will we do if he thinks badly of you?? how can we cope
casualruffian.bsky.social
It's not trying to excuse the terrible things they'll say and ways they'll vote, it's just kinda an observation about How It Is.

Rural Oregonians are very Like That about a lot of "liberal" things. They'll bitch and moan about it all as a concept and then break out their chainsaw to clear the road for those lesbians down the street when a tree falls 'cause those are neighbors, not liberals.

I had an English teacher in High School who was from Mississippi who told us about how in the South it was very common to hear people express racist hate for a group and then be like "Oh, not Jon though. He's a good guy, he's my neighbor. My kid mows his lawn, his wife makes the best cookies."

Oh 100% I was raised in super rural Oregon & we just fuckin hate being told what to do. As long as it doesn't affect the community as a whole (privatizing public land, putting in gas pipelines) and you're an ok neighbor, what you do is your own damn business.

What The Hell Is Going On, a thread:

I’ve seen some thinkpieces and posts about Portland protests that fail to understand the long-term hyperspecificity of Portland culture/humor, and frame it as a sort of shitposting meme-pilled ironic thing. Which is wrong.

So I’m gonna give you my breakdown.

It's so annoying! I just like my trashy history and my occasional "wow people really out there doing things" dips. I don't wanna get clickbaited into god knows what by these weird ai fiction videos.

Like all super Taboo Yikes porn too."The daughter of a plantation owner was locked in a barn escaped enslaved men and then THIS happened..."

The new version of ElsaxSpiderman youtube sure is something, I'm just saying. Luckily they're all JUST that side of "uhhhhhhh" so I don't actually get fooled.

Youtube has discovered I will click on videos about out of pocket reddit stories and also out of pocket History videos (like, say, a video about mollasses murdering people in Boston or Weird Shit Medieval Ascetics Did) and started feeding me AI generated ones. And half of them sound like porn.

as someone who gets songs like that absolutely entrenched in my head and has some echolalia, I can sympathize with the kid.

Exactly! I wasn't even born yet and grew up in Southern Oregon, but it was such a big deal that I can confidently say that it affected my world view and everyone knew someone who was directly affected by the ash at minimum.

They had a book where visitors could write recollections about Mt St. Helens in, which I thought was a neat way to remind the public that the contributions of your average joe can help paint a better picture of Big Things

James Bond IS pretty smarmy but you're right. He's so good at it

But I'd already taken a pic so here it is
A museum display of commemorative jars and bags of Mt St Helens volcanic ash. The labels and jar tops all have a blue & white theme

I went to the Columbia Gorge Museum in Stevenson WA & they had a little corner about the eruption.

My Autism Spectrum ass was like "I need to tell my friend Mount St. Helens in 1980 that I saw something about their special interest today :D!" but remembered that following on bsky =/= friendship.
