New article time!

This one's about Planescape: Torment. I was commissioned to cover it, so I have. I was... disappointed to find I didn't really like the game. I tried not to be too mean, but I really, really disliked this game's treatment off women.

okay here’s the one about planescape
Over the years, I have taken some commissions to write about various video games. One of those was to write about Planescape: Torment, and…

I did all the production work on a game where my producer would disappear for weeks at a time, pop back in, go "any blockers? No?" and leave. He wanted full time pay for this

He tried to change his credit to "creative producer" right at the end of development. I should have removed it entirely.
The truth of video game production is that production labor is a fixed entity; the work of production *must* be done for the game to ship and it will be done. The difference between good and bad producers is that good producers do it, while bad producers have it done around them.

Exclusive: A U.S. official has alleged wrongdoing by U.S. spy chief Tulsi Gabbard in a complaint that is so highly classified it has sparked months of wrangling over how to share it with Congress, according to people familiar with the matter.

Congress hasn’t seen the complaint, which was filed eight months ago with the U.S. intelligence community watchdog’s office.

I reviewed HORSES (didn't like it), advocated for the [redacted] of a particular french child, detailed my exploits at making a man so angry he ascended to godhood to fail to kill me, and so much more.

It's one of my biggest articles ever!
HOORAY!!! IT'S THAT TIME AGAIN!

Every year, I look forward to looking back on the games I played and looking forward to the games I will play.

That's right, 81 reviews of 69+3 games!!!

Come check it out!

I need about $350 for tomorrow's doctor's visit and $600 for insurance, so like... if you like the fact I wrote 81 reviews for you and distributed them for free, just a few people tipping $20 would go a long way towards softening the blow of my medical costs. money beyond that goes to debt

A joy to read: someone enthusiastic and knowledgeable about games writing short reviews of the games they played last year. Doc puts out some of the best games writing there is.

I'm planning to replay all the Remedy games (apart from Death Really, sorry) in readiness for the MP remakes, and genuinely fascinated to see how Remedy handles them. It's the kind of space where a self-aware remake would fit perfectly, but also appreciate that would take an immense amount of work.

Reactionaries don't have deep thoughts.

They merely react.

Everything funnels back to the thing they're guarding:

A hierarchy that grants them a position of power and privilege.

Everything can be and will be used or dismissed in order to defend that position.

It doesn't have to make sense.
The far right's smartest people are deeply ignorant.

Here's Curtis Yarvin showing he knows nothing about the history of civil disobedience.

Henry David Thoreau invented the term in 1849, to describe practices that had existed long before that.

rough patch 3/4ths of the way through, but i'm forever hooked on the huge environments and the way the game keeps revealing that the last one you were just in was one of countless similar ones within an even bigger structure

People who may want to have children in the future should bear this in mind: tear gas can have serious consequences for female reproductive health. The data on this isn't great but I would at least recommend ensuring you have a quality respirator or mask on at all times.

This whole series of threads is about game dev but equally applies to any producer/project manager/whatever across almost any industry.

If your meetings don't have clear purpose, they're for show. If your process isn't making work easier and output higher quality, it's for show.
I think it's good and sensible for a team to meet up once a week, but whether the regular meetings are 1/day or 1/week, they all need to be run thoughtfully and efficiently. If the meetings are not, in truth, helping people do their work better, you *have to* change it up.

all producers are multipliers on the output of their team. It is very possible for that multiplier to be less than 1
There are a lot of roles in game dev where someone bad in a role can do damage, but a bad producer can be so unbelievably damaging that it truly would be better to have no one in the role at all.

Just as good producers are force multipliers, bad producers are like throwing sand into a gearbox.
A good producer is absolutely an incredible force multiplier and allows the folks who are creating the actual artifacts to be more effective.

A producer beholden to methodology or who does not understand the needs of the game they're working, however, can do irreparable damage very easily.

I’m convinced this is why they killed covid aid so quickly

It was breaking the narrative of government inability
How many times in your life have you heard a member of Congress or someone on TV say “we can’t afford it” when talking about something small but very important? It’s been happening my entire life. We can’t afford it? They’re putting seven times the annual budget of the EPA into immigrant detention.
