Angela Rayner's legacy will be bigger than anybody in the media who has been after her head since day one. Against all odds she has helped bring about a huge uplift to workers' and renters' rights. Meanwhile, journalists spend their days snipping women. Thank you for everything you've done, Angela.

My parents are caregivers to people with highly complex needs. When they asked about booster eligibility for COVID-19, their concerns were dismissed on the basis that even frontline medical professionals were not eligible this year.

Can we please stop comparing frontline medical professionals to caregivers? If a frontline medical professional contracts COVID-19, the chances are that they can be temporarily replaced by someone else while they recover. Caregivers often can't.

True. Apologies, I was just a tad giddy at the prospect of Farage getting owned by Rachel Reeves.

How does this stop them from increasing the rent tenants pay?
ceremonialgeek.bsky.social
What about the renters, though? Or maybe I have misunderstood your post.

The UK Labour Instagram account has just posted about Nathan Gill. This is more like it!

@danneidle.bsky.social What is your take on this?

There is talk of Reeves taxing rental income. This sounds good in theory, but won't landlords pass extra costs onto tenants? How can one ensure that landlords don't unfairly increase prices?
ceremonialgeek.bsky.social
This is something I will have to look up on Google.
ceremonialgeek.bsky.social
I'm not sure, but there is a rumour circulating that Reeves will introduce some tax on landlords. Whether this will happen or not remains to be seen.

Is this decision a good or a bad one?
ceremonialgeek.bsky.social
What makes you think that? I'm interested?

It would be objectively hilarous if Starmer has been secretly negotiating this for the past year.
ceremonialgeek.bsky.social
The media hate Labour anyway. They may as well just go for it.

Bingo. For example, I question Shabana Mahmood's approach to the immigration situation, but I don't question her motives. That is just one example.

It is from the Times. I am aware that the EU are unlikely to entertain a return, but this sort of upfront honesty is something I have wanted from them. While Starmer is probably doing all he can in terms of actual EU policy, this is hugely welcome, and how they should take the fight to Reform.

They said they wouldn't raise VAT rates if those are left alone; they can do what they like, including adding VAT to things that aren't currently taxed. It is sneaky, but it isn't precisely a breach.

I suspect:
CGT.
VAT on some items that are not currently taxed.
Gambling levy.
ceremonialgeek.bsky.social
The narrative has pivoted leftwards over the past couple of weeks.

Perhaps I am being delusional, but could Starmer and Reeves be paving the way for some CU agreement with the EU? The Times have said that Reeves will pin tax rises on Farage and Brexit. If they announced a return to the CU or similar, I might wet myself.
