Mmm this feeds into my other fear that when I'm reading classic literature that it is referring to something so of the moment that it doesn't explain it and I don't realise it, so I'm taking the completely wrong meaning from it.

it's interesting. A different situation but I'm working on a historical fiction at the moment and I often wonder how much knowledge a reader should reasonably be expected to bring with them into a book or how much must I elaborate on or assume they can go look up.

Mmmm, having read it now, I'm not sure I agree with him that it is what is happening here. If someone is writing a series of autofiction books, I don't think it's unreasonable for its readers to be familiar with the first one or the subject already.

I was thinking about this recently! I haven't read the piece yet but I always wonder if "not meant for me" is just politely me saying "I think it's bad", even though there is plainly lots of things I'm not inclined to enjoy. It's interesting
