A bit about me: I'm a music educator in Alberta. Been doing that for over a decade. I also conduct in a community organization, I'm a tech enthusiast, and I like to know what's going on. I am very much anti-UCP, CPC, GOP, etc.

And I'm pleased to see familiar folks on here already!
You absolutely cannot let the precedent be set by allowing the UCP to utilize the Notwithstanding Clause. You have to make it clear that you will not be bullied.

This government wants the tools at their disposal to work. It's yours to make sure they don't work.

Putting my private citizen hat on for a second.

Alberta teachers, you've heard about potential use of the Notwithstanding Clause to stop any back-to-work order court challenges.

You need to get on your leadership NOW and tell them to REFUSE to go back if it is used.

Happy municipal election day, Alberta. Because the UCP doesn't believe in 21st century technology we won't see results until later this week.

Fuck you, UCP.

How to lose the 2027 provincial election, part 1.

On the teachers strike...

House Leader Joseph Schow refused to rule out using the Nothwithstanding clause to remove teachers right to strike and force them back to work.

I don't agree that she should use it in any scenario but when it comes to a full-blown education system that affects an enormous number of Albertans, there's going to be some serious blowback.

Politics is also about scale. This is a much, much larger scale that affects significantly more people.
That's it. That's the entire ball game. It's about power and self-preservation. This is a really inconvenient time for the UCP to have these kinds of disputes. If they go nuclear with legislation then it's going to be a steep uphill battle in the 2027 election.

That's why they want this to end.
Every day this goes on, they bleed votes in Calgary. You need to win two out of three to form government: Edmonton, Calgary, Rural Alberta (ish).

I'm telling you, Calgary UCP MLAs are telling the government to get a deal done because they don't like what's going to come if legislation is used.
They cannot win if they lose those critical Calgary ridings. This is why they gave the ATA a shot at enhanced mediation. Not because they're feeling generous. It's because they're sick and tired of the calls, emails, and letters left at their constituency offices.

They want it to stop.
🧵You need to understand one fundamental thing here. To the UCP, power is everything. That's it. Full stop. Power. Is. Everything.

They need the bleeding to stop because in their eyes they have to be in control of Alberta and the 2027 election is coming up fast.

“We want teachers to go back to work on Monday with a promise of enhanced mediation but class caps are out of the question” is code for “Please help us stop bleeding votes in Calgary.”

The UCP is super easy to read. They are desperate to end this strike.

Not when they barely won the 2023 elxn by 2-3K votes all concentrated in yyc. Think they'll win 2027 by using the nwc on public sector?
Oh I never said they cared about public education. We all know they don't. But they care about power and the UCP thinks power is everything. It's life to them. It's like a drug.

That's what I'm getting at. It's a self-preservation play, that's all this is. They want the vote bleeding to stop.

Confirmed. Beyond any shadow of a doubt.
Unfortunately, I need to stay vague on this one. But I did prove it 100%.

This is going to be a weird conversation in a week and a half.
This is Calgary-North West, the riding Minister of Indigenous Relations Rajan Sawhney represents in the Legislature. Notice something interesting? She only won by 143 votes.

You don't think the UCP is scared of back-to-work legislation for teachers? Think again.

This is Calgary-North, the riding UCP MLA Muhammad Yaseen represents in the Legislature. Notice something interesting? He only won by 129 votes.

This is Calgary-East, the riding UCP MLA Peter Singh represents in the Legislature. Notice something interesting? He only won by 698 votes.

This is Calgary-Cross, the riding Minister of Justice Mickey Amery represents in the Legislature. Notice something interesting? He only won by 514 votes.

This is Calgary-Bow, the riding Education Minister Demetrios Nicolaides represents in the Legislature. Notice something interesting? He only won by 623 votes.

Vought knows that the Senate Republicans can change the rules so a simple majority of 51 can reopen government but he thinks you're too stupid to understand that.

Republicans don't need one single Democrat vote to reopen government. They have 53 senators in the chamber. You do the math. 🤷‍♂️
Danielle Smith really, really doesn't want to table back-to-work legislation for teachers. She knows that will deal a big blow to UCP support in Calgary.

She knows it's a card they can't afford to play. Watch her presser. You can see it.

"I call on union leaders to make the right decision..." - Nicolaides

But they are making the right decision in following the directive of the membership they are ultimately accountable to. That's how this works. You attack them, you attack all of us.

"Union leaders declined our proposal." - Nicolaides

Actually, they declined on our behalf when the UCP said class caps were out of the question - one key issue teachers gave the ATA a mandate to negotiate for in an agreement.

So, teachers declined the proposal.

So the entire reason why this offer was likely made: It's now costing them critical votes in Calgary that they desperately need in the next provincial election.
Say what you want about the ethics of the UCP (they have none), but they are amazing at self-preservation. It's the one thing they do well. I bet you this offer was a result of intense pressure internally to get a deal before the Legislature sits.

It's costing them votes in Calgary.
