I've been getting back into the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series after many years, and the most relatable part is how everyday objects like doors and elevators have been imbued with artificial intelligence and it just makes them obnoxious and frustrating to use and everyone hates it.
I’m only halfway through the book, though, so I haven’t even gotten to the what to do about it part yet either.
I’ve seen a couple of his interviews, and he some of his answers to questions are literally quotes from the book, but I feel like those interviews focus more on what enshittification is than the details of how and why it happens or what to do about.
I’m also biased against this stuff because I’m reading Enshittificafion right now, which is a great book if you haven’t picked it up yet: craphound.com/shop/

I worry about Bluesky’s recent announcement about messing with algorithms, but I think it’s just for Discover feed, which I’ve never found that useful for discovery anyway.
To keep people “engaged” on a platform as long as possible so they see as many ads as possible, probably by prioritizing the kinds of posts they’ve seen keep people hooked the longest.

we must attack and dethrone time
I think directing people to artists’ websites is a better approach.
That’s a battle you won’t win. Instagram is hopelessly enshittified, and the algorithm isn’t there to help your followers see what you post.
Again, designing outside your happy path is designing for real life.

The real work of design remains in the judgment, empathy, and intent that only human designers can provide."
"The rise of AI prototyping tools is a reminder of what design truly involves: not just arranging pixels or chasing fidelity but interpreting context, establishing priorities, and creating nuance…
"Here’s the irony: while AI promises to close skill gaps, it works best in the hands of people who understand the craft. It takes a strong foundation of design and technical knowledge to produce meaningful outcomes."

AI prototyping tools follow general directions but lack the judgment and nuance of an experienced designer.

This is what I used when I first joined.
Finally got my hardcover copy of #enshittification in the mail
“…But Atlas is a browser that actively fights against the web, and in doing so, it's fighting against the very idea that you should have control over what you see, where you go, and what watches you while you're there.”
“The most worrisome part is that Atlas looks so familiar, and feels so innocuous, that people will try it and mistake it for a familiar web browser just like the other tools that they've been using for years. …”
