My latest for @theappeal.org:

James Carver spent 36 years in prison after he was convicted of setting one of the deadliest fires in #Massachusetts history. But after reviewing new scientific evidence, a judge set him free.

“They took my life away for nothing,” Carver said.

This is terrifying!

ICE breaks into this woman’s car in the pick-up line at West Loop Elementary school in Chicago and detains her before she can pick her kids up from school. (They were eventually let go after showing their documents)

Besides linking Tylenol in pregnant women to autism, RFK Jr. now says circumcision is part of the reason why kids are autistic.

"Children who are circumcised early have double the rate of autism, and it's highly likely because they're given Tylenol. None of this is positive..."

McDermott is one of three out of 14 Massachusetts sheriffs to face legal trouble due to alleged misconduct since last fall.
The sudden change in the association’s leadership comes at a sensitive time for the elected law enforcement figures; a series of allegations against several sheriffs have cast their positions in a renewed, if unflattering, light.

Hampden County Sheriff Nick Cocchi, the association’s current vice president and immediate past president, was charged with drunken driving last fall. He later admitted prosecutors had enough evidence to convict him and had his case continued without a finding under a plea.

Then, in August, Suffolk County Sheriff Steven W. Tompkins, another past president of the association, was arrested and accused by federal prosecutors of extorting a cannabis company.

The letter apparently said that Pistone was not invited to the funeral of one of the officers he put on leave after that officer recently died unexpectedly.
Specifically, the letter references the funeral services last week for Officer Katelyn Tully, 32, who died unexpectedly on Sept. 26.

"We admire Officer Tully’s family for excluding you," the letter said. "Be clear. You are not welcome at the funerals of our fallen. This is not the will of a single family, but of many. Your condolences are hollow. Your presence, an insult."

According to the Eagle-Tribune, Tully's father said she was among the officers placed on leave in connection with the July death of Francis Gigliotti, 43.

Still struggling to understand why Judy Woodruff had used her PBS senior correspondent status to constantly highlight these inane "why can't we all just get along?" groups that try to push for political unity by ignoring the substance of people's disagreements.

www.pbs.org/newshour/sho...
Judy Woodruff:

For Lisa Inks and others, the key to not turning conservatives off is also the language being used that can signal a bridging group's political leanings, even if they're nonpartisan.

Lisa Inks:

There are words that will immediately close off conservatives to what we're doing and signal, I think incorrectly, that this is sort of a left-leaning organization.

Judy Woodruff:

Like what?

Lisa Inks:

When we talk about words like equity and racism, those are unproductive words when we're trying to get people across the political spectrum.

As part of the latest moral panic about crime, a #Massachusetts state lawmaker is trying to increase the penalty for assaulting a cop and make it illegal just to *witness* a so-called "street takeover."

#mapoli

www.masslive.com/politics/202...
State Rep. Steven Xiarhos spent decades as a cop on Cape Cod. And when he looks at the “street takeovers” that hit four communities across Massachusetts last weekend, he doesn’t mince words.

“You need to respect police officers. They’re risking their lives for us 24/7,” Xiarhos, R-5th Barnstable, told MassLive as he left a memorial service for fallen officers at the State House on Wednesday.

To make sure that happens, Xiarhos said he’s filing two bills to tackle the growing social media phenomenon that’s leading to some real-world consequences.

The first would boost the penalty for assaulting a police officer from the current misdemeanor in most cases to a felony.

The second is based on existing law in Florida. That statute, enacted in 2022, prohibits street takeovers and punishes spectators and participants alike.
