Oh. My. God. I did not realize this article cited “ai” use in science in its reasoning.

These tools are incredible, it’s true. AlphaFold is straight up an example of how AI can actually work for us. But even that starts with a scientist with an idea!
None of the examples in this article are “restarting the world’s idea machine.” They are AI tools helping scientists automate rote or routine tasks.

America, you have spoken loud and clear: You do not like AI. But what if AI is the way to restart the world’s idea machine?
We’re running out of good ideas. AI might be how we find new ones.
What if the best use of AI is restarting the world’s idea machine?

This is basically correct to me, as to what the correct attitude towards social media right now is. Use writing and reading to think and understand, use video to tell the world about it.

the proximate reason i post here — beyond the fact that i like a lot of you and enjoy reading your thoughts and jokes and observations — is that this is a non-algorithmic platform where people share lots of stuff and people read what is shared. that's still valuable even if it doesn't "influence!"

This is embarrassing.

No you can't. Telling a computer to paint something for you is not remotely the same as painting something yourself, what is wrong with these people

Without Trump's unconventional hiring strategy we wouldn't have such great innovations as overseas torture camps and a pointless war with Venezuela.

Is it possible to imagine a scenario in which this would be a problem? Yes, but it's virtually the same as with seatbelt laws in that the hypothetical problems are disproportionately outweighed by the benefits (and by a few orders of magnitude at that).
My least popular (and most correct) view is that cars should be automatically limited to the local speed limit. Put the pedal to the floor and you still can't go over 25mph in a residential area.

(15 in Manhattan btw)
There is no possible justification for limiting e-bikes to 15mph but not cars.

I hate to admit this but Ryan Lizza has been telling the truth. I don’t know why some of you are painting him as the sole villain.
Olivia Nuzzi wouldn’t go on the record denying that she wrote that strategy memo for RFK Jr.

Millions of lives annually, globally. (50%+ reduction in deaths, almost definitely)
People lose their minds about this but it would save literally thousands of lives.

Shocked to learn that despite 1,000 op-eds about how they are now a workers' party, Republicans are doing what they always do when they're in power
We have $ for a dozen ICE agents to hang around for hours trying to arrest 2 roofers working in MN.

Meanwhile, the agency that investigates and prosecutes violations of Americans' right to organize is shedding staff again. Now down to like 1 agency staff per 145,000 workers.

The same people who think we need to bring back real standards to academia also want to give all students a “suspend my professor” button if they don’t like how things are going
From the Oklahoma U student paper: the school is now saying it will automatically suspend faculty (with pay) in response to student complaints

If you're wondering what happened to Nate Silver, he was into the COVID lab leak theory and got negative feedback online, including from epidemiologists and virologists and (GASP!) posters, which added to his belief that The Woke are victimizing Nate Silver. It spiraled from there.

I'm not kidding.

The reason you defend civil liberties is not because it is popular (it is never popular) but because if the government can deport you to a foreign gulag without trial then it doesn't matter how popular the rest of your policy platform is.

One of my earliest realizations of the complete vacuousness of libertarianism was hearing them insist that driving slower than the speed limit is more dangerous than speeding.
So if we really want to save lives we should install a mandatory minimum speed for cars rather than a maximum, got it.

The thread is great it really is, people have superbly and supremely weird ideas about why unsafe speeds make safe driving. My current leader is all the white people who say they need to drive fast to, it seems, outrun ICE
It is not a "surveillance state" for your car to know that the speed limit is 25 miles per hour.
