You are not obliged to let your moral compass spin with the election results. You have a right to hold unpopular opinions. You have a right to your own damn principles.

Remember that. Please.
They Cannot Conquer For Ever

Riom Trials, babey.
this is obviously intended to chill dissent but i think it's going to backfire on them. what the lawmakers said was just directly true. and trying to get them for it is just going to raise their profile and the salience of what they said!
MS NOW confirms: The FBI is working with Capitol Police to schedule interviews with the six Democratic lawmakers who urged service members to refuse to comply with illegal orders.

ICYMI: One of the most interesting things about sci-fi is that ideas like a space elevator or an O'Neil cylinder can "exist" as discrete, almost Platonic concepts without ever taking on physical manifestation.

The folks at Heat Death very kindly gave me space to talk about the implications of that.

Somebody please ask the President of the United States about this, I honestly want to know what he'd say.

There used to be a sort of universalized hypocrisy, where everybody assumed that somebody else cared about good and evil and right and wrong, and so at least tried to pretend they did too, and the whole system slouched onward more-or-less functionally. Don't know how you restore that now.
Rep. Salazar on Venezuela: "We're about to go in ... we need to go in ... Venezuela for the American oil companies will be a field day"

Bonus #MapMonday, this one is based off of a short story I read years ago where there was a nuclear war in the 1980s and the Non-Aligned Movement ended up as the world's dominant powers. Unfortunately, cannot remember the title or the author, but it was pretty good I think!

We are just going to keep smashing apart the foundations of the modern world until we feel like we imagined we would have felt in 1950 again, and we don't care how many people we kill or how much value we destroy to do it.
Trevor Phillips proposes banning "remittances" (ie: imposing currency/exchange controls on international cash transfers by foreign nationals from Britain). He says this would disincentivise immigration, in a Times piece saying the Home Secretary needs to go [much] further

This show is great, every episode is like "I am 73 years old and dependent on a CPAP machine. I moved to the middle of Blood Bear Death Ravine, seven thousand miles from the nearest generator. I am morally opposed to hunting and farming, and my budget is $16.34. Please send help." 10/10, no notes.

CAP. ANTILLES: "And so I present my plan, for an elite fighter squadron that also does covert ops and serves as the face of New Republic public relations."

MON MOTHMA: "But Wedge, that's stupid."

ADM. ACKBAR: "Why would we want that?"

CAP. ANTILLES: "Oh God, you're right, what was I thinking."

I don't know what even the point of arguing with these people is anymore, but the idea that "the crime gene" had been weeded out by 19th-20th century Europe is something you have to be a genuine imbecile to believe.

This is a true prophecy, as true as yours ever were. When the souls rise up in glory, yours shall not be shunned nor sundered, but shall be the prize of the gods’ gardens. Even your darkness shall be treasured then, and all your pain made holy, Charlie Brown.

I really cannot recommend @eomproject.bsky.social in strong enough terms; it was a huge influence on my own writing and creative direction, and is just an extraordinarily enjoyable piece of media, both on its own terms, and as a Star Trek project.

I would describe Rubio as having the internal consistency and reasoning abilities of an LLM except that I think the technology may already have outpaced him.
We’re not far from Rubio arguing with himself from the perspective of two different jobs he holds

Actually, Lee Harvey Oswald was killed by JFK, acting alone.
JFK was killed by Lee Harvey Oswald, acting alone.
My first political memory - exactly 62 years ago right now, a 4-year-old boy trying to understand his mom's tears - is still the biggest event in my lifetime. We still (IMO) don't *really* know who killed JFK, but we know the public's trust was shattered. It's a straight line to today's mess

And another thing: I'm mad. Please put it in the newspaper that I got mad. I am not ashamed of my emotions, which I believe are a normal and human reaction to events, and I welcome a frank and open discussion of why I feel that way, and possible paths forward.

Boy, Nancy Salzman's complaint that people blamed her just because the spiritual teacher whose "technology" she built her entire philosophy and organization around ran turned out to be running an anorexic sex slave cult out of it at the same time does not come off as particularly.......credible.
If I discovered and invented a revolutionary new suite of psychological technologies that allowed people to self-actualize their ambitions and take conscious control of their emotional state of mind, I would simply then not turn it into an anorexic sex cult.

I will say that I think the meeting today is a sign that the more eschatological predictions about American politics that you see on here are probably misguided, which could be either a good or bad sign, depending on your perspective. I'm honestly not sure either. But that's a long-term trajectory.
“trump is ecstatic to meet the muslim socialist immigrant mayor of new york while MAGA’s strongest soldier from georgia-14 resigns in disgust” is a fucking coalition-breaking disaster for the hard right
no, it’s fucking terrible for trump, lol
