One of the reasons to reject the obligatory demands for conservative affirmative action in liberal institutions is that the people who take advantage of it almost invariably function as a fifth column explicitly dedicated to destroying the institution from within.

look you all know what I meant

Not to keep belaboring a dead horse, but this is the same logic underpinning the various Ezra Klein brouhahas; there has be a shared set of universal American values for, ergo, anything that enough people believe is inherently part of those values and cannot be gainsaid or condemned.

You think I'm exaggerating, but the @washingtonpost.com said it was unfair to say that Mike Pence supported conversation therapy because somebody else might have written the section of his campaign website where he said he supported conversation therapy.
The Washington Post said Mike Pence doesn't support conversion therapy. No one's having it. - LGBTQ Nation

Fond memories of 2020, when it was decided by the media that it was definitionally impossible for Republicans to be homophobic even if they opposed SSM or gay rights, in the same way that "everyone agrees" that racism is bad, ergo nobody important can ever be accused of racism.

An exchange in tonight's VA Gov debate:

AS: My opponent has previously said that she does not think gay couples should be allowed to marry.

WES: That’s not discrimination!

AS: She said that she is, quote-unquote, morally opposed to same-sex marriage.

WES: That’s not discrimination! (1/2)

Definitely Stirling's best work imho.

I mean, the bigger problem with this discourse is that "we" have relatively little control over whether people are immiserated or not.

I mean, ngl, "what they don't know/is your real advantage/when you live for someone/you're prepared to die" is a line that has stuck with me.

When my (Jewish) grandmother met my (non-Jewish) mother for the first time, her response was "Oh, she's not REALLY a WASP, she's neurotic and anxious, just like us."

James McMurtry, and it's not even really close imho.

I also need to know: I am fairly middle-of-the-road on Taylor Swift but someone I know called her the Greatest Living Lyricist. She is not.

Who is yours? Either the greatest or your favorite?
goldwagnathan.bsky.social
In theory! It's kind of bolted onto a regional split between the established powers of the Core and the rising powers of the Mid and Outer Rim, as well as a division between humans and aliens, AND some vague attempts at imposing a liberals vs. conservatives contemporary politics framing.
goldwagnathan.bsky.social
Once you're at the point where there's a consensus that "trying to overthrow the government" shouldn't be held against a politician or his movement, I don't really see how the country comes back from that.

You’ve gotta be kidding me.

This WaPo editorial presents a misleading revisionist history of Special Counsel Jack Smith’s criminal cases against Trump.

Then it has the gall to compare that to Trump’s overt targeting of his perceived enemies.

Really embarrassing stuff.
But the mere fact that a legal tool might be available does not mean it should be used. The
current rage over Grassley's revelation shows why. Smith showed little restraint in his pursuit of a former president. He charged Trump for official acts he took as president. He sought a gag order to limit Trump's ability to criticize the prosecution. He tried to accelerate the case to try a leading presidential candidate before the 2024 election.

I mean, fair play, y'know?

Trump is fighting for his life to stay awake during Andy Ngo's speech

IMHO, the big issue is that the CIS has never existed as anything more coherent than "bad guys", so I want to redesign it as a corporate oligarchy.
goldwagnathan.bsky.social
I actually have a fic planned out about this; where the CIS becomes the dominant economic power in the Galaxy and the Republic is a politically dysfunctional rump state that eventually gets taken over by a military coup led by Daala and Pellaeon.

Star Wars alternate history question:

Let’s assume Palpatine dies of a heart attack in the opening scenes of Attack of the Clones

What do you think happens to the galaxy?

I believe this is, genuinely, the subject of a famous rabbinic discourse in Kabbalah.

FUNDAMENTALIST CHRISTIAN LOGIC
1. A male is defined by having a penis and testicles
2. God is a male.

Therefore
3. God has balls and a wang.

Ask a fundamentalist how big god’s hog is. No matter how big he says it is, it will be a limit to the infinite size of god and therefore a blasphemy.

Only thing surprising is that the police are trying to identity the perpetrator. In most of the US it is de facto legal to murder people with your car, can't imagine them even pretending to care about an incident where the victim survives.
hugothepinkcat.bsky.social
Carbrain at its worst.

-Girl crosses at MARKED PEDESTRIAN CROSSING
-Driver runs into her
-Driver gets out of the car and proceeds to blame 17 year old girl for getting hit DESPITE BEING EXACTLY WHERE SHE NEEDED TO BE AND DESPITE THE FACT THAT PEDESTRIANS HAVE PRIORITY AT MARKED CROSSINGS
robsonfletcher.com
Police in Airdrie, Alberta (just north of Calgary) say this driver hit a 17-year-old girl in a marked crosswalk, got out of the vehicle, and appeared to get upset at the teenager before driving away.

They released this video and are now trying to identify the driver.

Her explicit reason for leaving, by the way, was that when she live-tweeted a staff meeting and accused her colleagues of hating free speech and they publicly pushed back, management refused to discipline them for arguing with her. You can understand most contemporary media dynamics from that alone.

It's amazing how everyone supporting her seems to forget she wasn't cancelled at all. She quit. And almost immediately was able to launch this new publication. How the hell was she cancelled?

Some people criticized shitty takes. That's not being cancelled.

As one of the countless people *actually* cancelled by Bari Weiss, via her vast favor-trading networks of fellow nepotistic gatekeepers in media and publishing, I think both of these asinine dipshits should go fuck themselves.

My statement on the two year anniversary of October 7, 2023.
“Two years ago today, Hamas carried out a horrific war crime, killing more than 1,100 Israelis and kidnapping 250 more. I mourn these lives and pray for the safe return of every hostage still held and for every family whose lives were torn apart by these atrocities.

In the aftermath of that day, Prime Minister Netanyahu and the Israeli government launched a genocidal war: adeath toll that now far exceeds 67,000; with the Israeli military bombing homes, hospitals, and schools into rubble. Every day in Gaza has become a place where grief itself has run out of language. I mourn these lives and pray for the families that have been shattered. Our government has been complicit through it all.

This must end. The occupation and apartheid must end. Peace must be pursued through diplomacy, not war crimes, and our government must act to end these atrocities and hold those responsible to account.

These last two years have demonstrated the very worst of humanity. We must answer it by modeling the very best: a relentless pursuit of our higher ideals and an unwavering commitment to universal human rights.”

I'm guessing he hasn't heard of Executive Order 9981.
