I think the most important phenomenon of Trump-era politics that people don't understand is that if people have to pretend to believe something for long enough they eventually start believing it for real.
I would like to think the Mad King proclaiming “I will continue to illegally raise taxes on the American people until the NATO alliance collapses” would be the type of statement to cause Congress to act, but I’m not sure there’s any red line the GOP Congress has anymore.
Trump says he'll impose a 10% tariff (rising to 25% in June) on Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the UK, the Netherlands and Finland, because they've sent people to Greenland, until the US can buy Greenland.

the only thing Democrats should be saying on Greenland is "this is evil and wrong and if we do it we will be punished"
like do i trust bernie would oppose the annexation? yes. do i think this is good messaging that is what EU allies need? no

One tough thing for people who get abducted by ICE is that they have no charges against them, so nobody from the agency is attached to their detainment. They just get held up, roughed up, and robbed of their valuables for no reason until ICE figures that out, and then they get dumped outside.

i know i should not even engage w/the supposedly serious "what are libs gonna do, give greenland BACK?" arguments but i honestly do not believe congress would do anything to formally annex the country so "giving it back" would just be a matter of withdrawing from an occupied foreign territory

I think Democrats should claim that they're going to make immigration tougher, and then simply describe a better version of system when asked about it. Polling consistently shows that the public wants to get tougher, and also that their version of tougher is *weaker than the actual system now.*

Greenland would be the 12th largest country in the world by area, and is significantly bigger than Alaska. It's really big, even if the Mercator projection makes it look much bigger than it actually is.

Real issue is it's mostly uninhabitable. It has about as many people as American Samoa or CNMI.

“When foreigners after looking about for some other Country in which they can obtain more happiness, give a preference to ours, it is a proof of attachment which ought to excite our confidence and affection.” —Benjamin Franklin
Indeed. I, for example, am inordinately proud of the fact that my mom became an American by choice.

Becoming an American is an act of love for this country. And so is the typical act of illegal immigration--it's an attempt to get at least a little piece of being an American.
It also pisses me off because naturalized citizens had to go through a process. They had to *do stuff* to become citizens.

I didn't have to do anything.

If anything, they ought to be *more* citizen than me, not less. Never met anyone who loved America more than immigrants love America.

one thing about every republican politician is that every last one of them is loyal to the party and disloyal to the republic. bill cassidy would knowingly murder american children to save the party. in fact, he did.
Also, if he's getting shivved by Trump anyway, why not return the favor and become one of the small group of Senators who can stop this nonsense.
Cassidy sentenced countless children to death, knowingly, by confirming RFK

and Trump stabs him in the back anyway

I hope it eats at him every miserable day of the rest of his life

The more I think about this, the angrier I get. It takes a particularly virulent strain of sociopathy to sit and let hard-working people serve you a meal knowing that you plan to arrest them and send them off for deportation once they're off of work.

Really depraved shit.
A few days ago, Fox News was whining about ICE agents getting heckled at a Mexican restaurant in Minneapolis.

Meanwhile, in the town of Willmar, ICE agents had lunch at a Mexican restaurant, waited until it closed, then confronted and arrested three workers as they left.

1) Here's the thing: this Greenland thing is wildly unpopular. Like 50 points underwater. WTF is wrong with the GOP that they feel the need to run and defend this thing that the American people absolutely fucking do not want?!
Cruz: "When it comes to Greenland, I want to commend President Trump for being single-mindedly focused on America first... I believe it is overwhelmingly in America's national interest to acquire Greenland... the whole history of America has been a history of acquiring new lands and new territories"

endless discourse on the "universal" ideas in 1984 abt what a totalitarian state could be like have people forgetting the very particular aspects that comment on the real world in the 1940s, like the vibe that britain was now just an airbase for american forces to keep an eye on continental europe
Saw this and thought 1) this begging for Britain to be a vassal state is pathetic and unpatriotic and 2) how bizarre to imagine in 2026 that Britain is in any position to decide who controls the world.
