Okay, starting my thread of comics threads. You can find the older threads (for now) on X/Twitter.

First thread: 5501-5594 is here, with Scott Summers fighting a giant octopus. bsky.app/profile/john...
I'm moving my comics tweeting (skeeting?) over here to Bsky, with Cyclops and a giant octopus, I guess. This thread will be #5501-5600 of the Complete Marvel Reading Order (cmro.travis-starnes.com). I did the first 5500 (!) comics over on Twitter.

Anyway, Cyclops! Giant Octopus! Let's begin.

The job right now isn't to advocate for more training, or body cams or QR codes or whatever because those things will be effective in their own right. It's to advocate for those things because it will bleed ICE's slush-fund white.

Because I am a masochist, this got me thinking about (ugh) the 2028 primaries. And, uh, my one suggestion is "as few debates as possible." Those things are clown cars that make everyone look small and push them to go at each other like crabs in a bucket.
We'll get some charismatic people in a year when the presidential race gets up and running. Everyone here will spend that time developing deep and performative hatreds for all but one candidate.

Until then there's just no structural way for that role to exist.

I'm sorry, folks, but we're now more than a year in. If you're new to the fact that I consider it dangerous & unacceptable to presume that the administration won't comply with a lawful court order, that's on you at this point. I've been discussing this here & writing about it at Law Dork nonstop.

Would a DHS shutdown shut down TSA? I guess they're probably essential, so working without pay?

People just going out here saying the literal opposite of what happened. Thune caved! Thune did! This is a cave by Thune and Senate Republicans, any possible way you cut it.

Again: snorting derisively about how useless bodycams are while ignoring all the other things the Democrats are asking for in the DHS bill is such a tell for people who are not serious.

Something I think is getting lost here in the scrum about Democratic strategy is that people thought starting with a small ask would foreclose getting more later, but Democrats literally started with a small ask in the DHS fight & have subsequently banked those asks & now look to be getting more.
January 29, 2026 at 5:44 PM
This seems like a preliminary to cutting bait and splitting off the DHS part, right? Like not even an attempt to whip votes by Thune.
The massive government funding package just failed badly in the Senate, 45-55.

Needed 60.

Zero Democrats voted for it.

SEVEN Republicans opposed it:

Budd
Johnson
Lee
Paul
Moody
Rick Scott
Tuberville

(John Thune switched his vote to no for procedural reasons.)

"abolish ICE isn't within grasp"

source: I made it up
“Abolish” or “defund” aren't within grasp in 2026. But where are:

- End qualified immunity
- Rewrite use-of-force so this crap isn't ruled “within policy”
- Overturn July 8 mandatory detention memo
- Reinstate TPS
- Open up detention centers, enforce humane conditions

He doesn’t even *ask* for it.

Are we in "Strange Death of Tory England" territory?
One reason I've been so bearish on the Tories over the past few years is I don't see a route out for them. They can't beat Reform on the right and they've lost their liberal vote.
So - I think Kemi Badenoch is *right* that the conditions for a centre-right party are worse now than they were in, say, 2019. The territory that Reform and she are scrapping over is electorally fertile. I just don't think it is territory the Conservative party, specifically, can win on:

For people who think the Democrats are aiming too low, here's one of the most "reasonable" Republicans in the Senate balking at "no masks for ICE agents".
Tillis says he opposes ICE being barred from wearing masks: "I've seen people dox me. I've seen people take pictures and identify law enforcement officers and then put their families at risk. So, I think that's a step too far."

John Thune declines chance to back Noem after Minnesota killing
Senate Majority Leader John Thune declined to say Tuesday whether he had confidence in Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem as President Donald Trump faces calls to fire her and Democrats push for her impeachment. “That’s the president’s judgment call,” Thune told reporters when asked about Noem, a fellow South Dakota native who previously served with him in the state’s congressional delegation. Noem has been at the center of intense scrutiny over the administration’s immigration enforcement tactics after federal agents killed 37-year-old Alex Pretti during a street skirmish on Minneapolis Saturday. Trump said Tuesday he was standing by the embattled secretary. While Thune’s comments fell well short of an endorsement of Noem’s performance, he has similarly withheld comment on other embattled Trump officials in recent months, including Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth in December. Thune said Tuesday he backs an impartial investigation of the Pretti killing, including probes by state and local officials, as well as a federal investigation outside of DHS. “Clearly, there a lot of questions that have to be answered,” he said, adding that investigations are “necessary … any time there’s a shooting like that and lives lost.” He doubled down on praise for Trump’s decision to send White House border czar Tom Homan to Minnesota to oversee immigration enforcement operations there, calling him “an experienced pro” and calling the moment an “opportunity to evaluate and to really assess the policies and the procedure.” Thune’s GOP counterpart across the Capitol, Speaker Mike Johnson, has been silent since the shooting, with the House out of session for a one-week break. The fallout from Pretti’s killing has upended the Senate’s plan to pass a six-bill spending package by the Friday midnight deadline to avoid a partial government shutdown. Democrats want DHS funding stripped out of the bill and renegotiated, but Republicans are hoping that they can appease Democrats with other actions. Thune said Democrats should make their policy demands “clear and known and see to what degree the administration will be able to address that,” adding that he “would prefer that there be a way that we keep the package together.” If Democrats block the six-bill package, as they have vowed to do, Thune said the Senate would move to “Plan B,” which is “to be determined.” Lead Art: Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) speaks with reporters as he walks into his office at the U.S. Capitol Jan. 27, 2026. | Francis Chung/POLITICO
