right. like, what bari weiss was saying, in front of a jewish audience, was, "i think that the media should reflect mainstream ideas, such as the idea that the jewish billionaire who placed me in charge of the news is part of a conspiracy whereby jewish billionaires control the news."
Some of the replies to this are just "yeah because they're billionaires" and I think that's missing what makes it all so disturbing. A lot of these people are like, Jews from the generation immediately after the Holocaust. It's *incomprehensible* that they dismiss shit like Musk doing Hitler salutes
i went through like nine separate revisions of this tweet because the actual substance of it -- "conservative jewish billionaires somehow don't care about antisemitism against american jews" -- has the pattern of an antisemitic conspiracy theory but is substantively the inverse of one.

Cannot overstate how, from my perch as a national-security reporter, this would have been an earth-shattering scandal in a prior era.
Billionaire Binance founder Changpeng Zhao, pardoned by Donald Trump, has been accused of facilitating millions of dollars’ worth of payments to Hamas in the wake of its attack on Israel on October 7 2023. Zhao also financed the Trump family's entrance into the cryptocurrency market.

one thing that's really interesting about this is that the stated motivation for a lot of this stuff is fighting antisemitism, and then they mention Dana Loesch, a vocal antisemite.

“IT” outside of programming has smelled like an intentional ghetto for so long
one of the things i objected to most at at GOOG over the years, from the labor perspective, is the slow decay of the blue-collar routes up into corp. you used to encounter guys who started out swapping drives in 120 degree heat in the hot aisles and who were now SREs, and that's gone.
Yes. I probably could have put it better in the original post and tried to clarify in the next one

i don't want to discuss the ways in which this is wrong, BUT there are a subset of tech jobs -- like, if you are the only sysadmin at a small baked bean company -- which have the same cultural valence as "HVAC contractor," as in "highly-paid WWC job," and have the same politics.
November 25, 2025 at 1:05 AM
i think you might be able to do this but it's, uh, not the infra team's job. the infra team's job is linear. sparse experts / cut cache misses tenfold (and that's more than just kv cache) / mixture-of-depths probably gets you two OOMs.

A thing that I feel has not been discussed enough is that the highly paid IT and infosec guys at any company you care to name all seem to be absolutely insane right-wing freaks with the impulse control of a drunk toddler

was interested in the difference parameter count makes in extended writing, and to my eye the Opus version (below) is much, much better than the Sonnet version, which surprised me because the Sonnet 4.5 is much better than the Opus 4.1.

"i thought i should own the means of production so i did" is not exactly a repudiation of capitalism but it certainly is a repudiation of the place most people have in it
Archetypal example is “capitalism ground me down so I quit my job and set up a small business so that I’m my own boss”. You didn’t dislike capitalism! You disliked authority!

the best possible remake of Rogue One would be a third season of Andor which is just Rogue One
rogue one is bad folks. i have believed this since i saw it in theaters and no subsequent rewatch has changed my mind. basically a chop job until the final sequence, which is good (for star wars)

interesting. my understanding of what has happened is:

(a) that this is a dismissal without prejudice which unwinds both the case at bar and the indictment resulting in it, but;
(b) the statute of limitations has run, meaning that this dismissal is effectively prejudicial anyway.

in theory, this is what the "human terrain" project was. In practice, it sent people *without experience or knowledge of Afghan kinship structures* into Afghanistan.
My infantry Bn had a really hard time parsing the gender and sexuality issues of Southern Helmand.

When people say, "you wouldn't want a 'purple haired gender studies major' in the Marines" I reply "YES we desperately needed them!" We had teams of anthropologists who published studies for us.

i have always kind of felt sorry for noah smith because he is extremely gullible and bad and at analysis despite being mostly good-natured, but now that he is insane and amoral it's kind of a relief not to feel like you're hurting a helpless animal when you say he's being a moron

anyway noah smith knows what he's doing
noah smith used to regularly DM me about the fact that his silicon valley venture capitalist buddies were going off the right-wing deep end because they were afraid they would get MeTooed for the fact that promotions for young employees at the startups they were funding were gated by sex
he once DM’d me and a couple of other people to tell us that we were wrong for calling him dumb about lab leak conspiracies and that some people he knew were working on a story that would make it crystal clear and it that was getting ready to drop soon, this was like, 2021, maybe earlier
