i'm not a big fan of westernizing name order in general but i can begrudgingly accept it in modern settings. but I'm pretty sure in ghost of tsushima and yotei's case it's just completely wrong.

it rly bothers me that characters in ghost of tsushima and yotei use western order for names. isn't the stylization rule that any names pre-meiji era are always left in eastern order?? eng version of sekiro also got this wrong.

it also kind of hurts the conceptually-great "gather information from the open world on the bad guys" plot because no matter where you go you'll stumble into a bandit atsu will automatically interrogate.

it's still SIGNIFICANTLY better than how tsushima did this same thing—that was a game where you couldn't go 10 seconds in the open world without running into another enemy patrol—but i still wish yotei was like... quieter. more breath of the wild and shadow of the colossus and red dead redemption 2.

they've created such a gorgeous landscape they seem to really want you to enjoy taking your time just riding around in but you can't go 30 seconds without stumbling over another map marker. even the most dialogue-heavy missions can't stop themselves from including a huge wave of bandits to kill.

ghost of yotei does better about it than tsushima but it still retains one of my biggest complaints: it is a game utterly terrified of the player getting bored.

anyway despite my complaints about the opening i'm really enjoying ghost of yotei so far lmao. immediately appeals to my aesthetic and storytelling sensibilities a lot more than the first game did. i support self-destructive women and revenge plots.

feels like it was a test audience thing??? like they added it late in development because they were worried little jimmy would be confused by questions that are answered by the second mission. you take out that first cutscene out and it's simply a much better opening.

ghost of yotei has the most baffling opening i can remember ever seeing for a big budget AAA video game. opening with an awkward sumi-e exposition cutscene before going right to an (actually good) proper cold open is bizarre.
