the translator noticed that too, the explicability of that part really tickles me — that’s why it’s written out phonetically as the English word ‘milk’ (ミルク, miruku) instead of actually turned into the japanese word for milk. presumably if it was “soy leche“ and fully in Spanish we’d get 私は牛乳です

the stuff in the other reply is true, we mention to our jp ESOL students to be aware that even though they’ve heard ‘watashi wa’ is ‘I am’, it’s not applicable to this ‘as for me’ use, don’t say I Am Coffee

but in this case it’s a direct result of the translator trying to say I Am Milk

lol, i wrote a followup tweet explaining this in case my japanese followers saw this but neglected to do so in English 😅 (didn’t expect that many people to see it…)
I was so flabbergasted that all I could do was mutter “watashi wa milk desu…” to myself in silent wonder and hit post

yeah the fact translators usually turn I Am ____ into 私は_____ is one of those lil subtle unnaturalisms

milk could more naturally introduce itself as ミルクです
or if it was a business milk possibly ミルクと申します

so i‘m jealous of that innocence of it all seeming fresh and fascinating to people in the 70s or 80s who weren’t at all coming from a place of “yawn i’ve seen this before”

and it must have been doubly so for Japan audiences who mostly didn’t have a preexisting Tolkienian-world concept

what i did have though was an impulse to seek parody and deconstruction of ‘stereotypicall’ fantasy, like Discworld and Order of the Stick. this helped me gradually embrace works that were using such settings unironically (though i still prefer stuff that doesn’t take itself too seriously)

since most of the genre wasn’t interesting me i couldn’t look on ‘stereotypical’ fantasy settings with a sense of wonder

(although one bad series from that time can partly be credited with why i write because i was like I CAN DO BETTER. if you know which series you know Rare Ebil Lore lmao)

as a kid who read Tolkien in elementary school and then encountered a bunch of disappointing more recent high fantasy, I arrived at age 12 big into SFF but jaded and uninterested in classic fantasy tropes

There's a neat thing on the internet archive for classic anime and RPG fans: translated transcripts, 'Replays', of the original tabletop sessions between Ryo Mizuno and friends that were serialized in Comptiq magazine and compiled into the original Lodoss War novels.

An introduction detailing how in 19876, Hitoshi Yasuda was approached by the editors of Comtiq to write a series of articles about the origins of RPG games and D&D. Yasuda settled on the 'Replay' format, got Mizuno and friends together, and cobbled together an original campaign setting, Lodoss Island.

Profiles and black and white illustrations of Parn, Deedlit, Ghim, Etoh, Slayn, and Wood Chuck.

The first of the chronicle pages of their adventures read like Twitch sessions of D&D transcribed and likely dramatized a bit.

But also OP didn’t say that. OP wrote “Emma Watson and JK Rowling is a perfect example of why you can't have a civil debate with transphobes,” referring to the fact that Watson tried to be civil with JKR, a transphobe, and it didn’t work out.
