Komeito, a socially liberal party affiliated with a lay Buddhist organisation, had criticised Takaichi's tough language on foreigners and visits to the Yasakuni Shrine - seen by neighbours as a symbol of Japan's past militarism.

Effectively, all the growth in remote-work policies can be attributed to private colleges. Before Covid-19, around one out of every 10 private-college employees could work remotely. Last week, BLS estimated that rate now sits at one in five employees. www.chronicle.com/article/desp...

Socialism’s headway within the Democratic Party also means it gains headway within America’s two-party system for the first time. Rather than aspire to be an independent third party... by coming in the back door through one of the two existing parties. thehill.com/opinion/cong...

Welcome to October, my current spooky season watch rec is: Khemjira!!

It’s a gothic-vibes romance series set largely in rural Ubon Ratchathani, starring Keng Harit Buayoi as the stoic master shaman Pharan and Namping Napatsakorn Pingmuang as our cursed ingenue protagonist Khem
Publicity poster for Khemjira; Pharan is hugging Khem protectively to his chest, a hand cupping his head, looking very seriously into the distance. A woman ghost is in the background above them

On 30 September 2025, 17 civil society organizations will hold an online press conference to launch a new report, “Our Shared Responsibility”: How Civil Society is Strengthening Local Resilience for a Federal Democratic Burma/Myanmar.

The report explores how Myanmar civil society groups are bridging the human rights and humanitarian crisis of today with Myanmar’s federal democratic future through diverse initiatives that strengthen local community resilience. It highlights how civil society groups deliver humanitarian aid in areas under junta attack and inaccessible to international agencies, promote sustainable community initiatives that foster self-reliance and social cohesion, protect human rights, and advance inclusive, bottom-up federalism.

During this online event, panelists will share key findings from the report, including Myanmar civil society groups’ innovative approaches to saving lives, implementing sustainable community-led solutions, and supporting local democratic governance. The panelists will also discuss the challenges Myanmar civil society groups must navigate to implement their missions and meet the needs of Myanmar’s most vulnerable populations on the ground.

Panelists:

- Naw Cherry, Karen Peace Support Network
- Naw Poe Dah, Burmese Women’s Union
- Rose, Progressive Voice

The panel will be moderated by Khin Ohmar, Chairperson of Progressive Voice. 54th Monthly Whats Happening In Myanmar update
