The cover of a free regency romance novella. A blonde white woman in a blue satin gown with a loose updo looks up at a man in a blue waistcoat. Only his mouth and chin are visible. He holds her hip and she has an open hand against his chest n the title A Midsummer Night’s Duke is centered on the cover and the authors name— Colleen Kelly — is below

All we can say is "this shouldn't be happening!!!" - but we can't really say WHY, because almost no-one is brave enough to say "the status quo for undocumented immigrants was exploitative. our immigration system is unjust and non-functional, and these people should have legal protection"

Wait… wait… you managed to avoid reencountering it until *now*? Impressively done

MAGA Catholics are so gross to me. first off, a LOT of these immigrants are Catholic, and the catechism is EXTREMELY CLEAR on the church being one united global body. those people are your family. your loyalty should be to them and not the president!

9 out of 10 US students -- roughly 50 million children -- attend public schools.

Despite RW efforts to frame their efforts as for parents ("parents' rights," "choice"), efforts to defund, deform. amd debilitate public schools is a broadscale attack on children and future generations.
Five Ways the Department of Education Is Upending Public Schools
The Trump administration has made a rapid succession of hires and decisions at the Department of Education that could spur profound changes in how schools operate and children learn. Here’s what to kn...

Educators should look at AI grading of student writing in the same way collective society looked at the potential for human cloning after the arrival of Dolly the sheep, something that is an affront to our humanity and must be rejected completely. There is no rationale to support this.

Teachers are overworked! So let’s pretend that if they use AI, they will save time and then we can hire even fewer of them! Outstanding. Nice work all around.

Never wished I spoke French more than reading this post (not even when i was in Provence broken asking “will you ship this to New York?” of a very disdainful woman in a pottery shop)

“It’s as though the modes of thinking intrinsic to the liberal arts have been fracked: excavated from their pedagogical bedrock; processed into generic, blandly adaptable ‘skills’; and then injected back into our curricula and institutions, albeit in a barely recognizable state”

I don’t like to post student malapropisms because it’s not kind and they’re learning, but “an act with fetal consequences” was too good not to share

Yes, the College Board has so suborned modern high schools that we willingly knuckle under & sacrifice a whole school day every year so that some combination of 9/10/11th graders can repeatedly take PSATs for 'practice,' and to better integrate them into the College Board's data collection system.

Yes. It’s good to be able to identify and summarize arguments (or “main ideas”) but that’s not the same as forming an interpretation

I don’t want to read too much into this because having been educated in the ‘90s I know that most kids were not fantastic readers of subtle irony then, either. Difference now (maybe) is that k-12 pedagogy has shifted to meet them where they are rather than set a bar many won’t reach as the standard

I scored the AP exam prose passage essay a few years ago, which was a Mavis Gallant story excerpt, and maybe 1 in 30 kids (generously) identified the irony in the piece, which was essential to understanding it. Any subtlety in tone is so so hard for them to notice let alone analyze

mortified my 14yo son by telling him “you don’t know the life of a showgirl, babe, and you’re never ever gonna” in front of his friends and this is what parenting is all about

Teaching Macbeth to sophomores right now, doing nothing fancy— read or listen to a scene, talk it over speech by speech, follow up on what they find weird or funny or confusing— and it’s going so well. High schoolers LOVE gossiping about toxic relationships

"'Never before in the life of any living American have so many books been systematically removed from school libraries across the country. Never before have so many states passed laws or regulations to facilitate the banning of books, including bans on specific titles statewide.'"
PEN America warns of rise in books 'systematically removed from school libraries'
A new report says that the number of books being challenged or removed from public schools across the country has risen exponentially in the past two years. A Clockwork Orange tops their list.
