the best poetry is as much magic as art, or, how john wieners said it, "poets are under magical orders"

Least favourite soup flavour? Like, which one is so bad you'd pour it on your enemies?

ME: Ok I'm done writing sad boy poems, let's write something inspiring!

*montage of me writing, skipping in meadows, laughing while eating salad, quirky folk music plays*

ME: *reading my new poem about that time a straight friend kissed me and then we never spoke again*

ME: ...
ME: Gawdammit.

Books with playlists are already suspect, but books with playlists that include anything by Lana del Ray deserve as much side-eye as humanly possible without giving oneself a tension headache.

Chef brain: ok that was good but next time let's grill the asparagus instead of boiling them, use herb salt instead of sea salt, more black pepper, less lemon juice, maybe a rye bread would be better than wholemeal, maybe a few chili flakes on top wouldn't hurt? ......

Mornings like today, food reminds me that I am part of the world, that I am eating the land that will one day eat me.

Sometimes, I just eat out of boredom, laziness, or the animal necessity of hunger.

Food connects us with the land, seasons, ancestors, and thousands of years of storytelling.

For Halloween, I'm dressing up as that deep pit of writhing in your stomach moments before you have to stand up and do a Public Speaking Thing and your palms are sticky and gross and you might need to find a loo quickly, suddenly, out of nowhere, even though you already went.

For Halloween, I'm dressing up as going to a social function where the one person you know disappears and you don't know who to talk to and there are no dogs or cats around to pet and all the conversations you overhear seem inscrutable.

Leo: Instead of fixating on your own flaws, turn that magnifying glass onto other people. Use sunlight to incinerate them like the disgusting insects they are.

I've been blocked for politely disagreeing with people before, and it really makes me wonder, why do they use social media? A podium to have a caltuve, trapped audience doesn't feel "social" to me.

People have 'hot takes' because they don't have deep thoughts. Every time someone begins a post with "Some of y'all aren't ready to hear this..." they proceed with stating the most basic ass thing that has ever been uttered by a sentient lifeform.

Wet, wild, stormy day. Feels like the universe is telling me I need to go find an old pub with a roaring fireplace, drink stout, and listen to an Irish music session. 🌩

NEW POEM #273: "After Camping With Jeff in the Dismal Swamp I Consider Companionship" by Dustin King

"But Jeff, I followed you as you followed a heron, flirting with her, / or him, olympian wings beating air as we slid between cyprus knuckles"

But a tree isn't limited to how it is useful to humans. Every tree is a home for wildlife, a warrior against climate change, a healer of the earth, a survivor of epochs, a story protector, a kind aunt and uncle, and a food bank for dozens of species in difficult times.

Writing tip: pull out old stories and/or poems from years ago and give them a tweak. You don't know it yet, but you've grown. 🖊
