I've seen the shit that highly educated white Europeans have dealt with, even with sponsoring institutions and expensive legal representation. I can't even imagine what it's like for nonwhite laborers surviving on marginal finances.

I think you're onto something. I've heard more than one actor talk about how those parts aren't particularly interesting much of the time, but the money lets them do interesting stuff that doesn't pay as well.
