An open sketchbook displaying a symmetrical pattern spread across both pages, the axis of symmetry being the inner margin where the pages are bound together. The pattern stops approximately one and one half inches short of the bottom of the page, where the white paper is left unpainted. The symmetrical image is composed of horizontal, black watercolor marks, flush with the outer edge page but not meeting in the center. The marks are of varying length, making a white, unpainted negative shape at the inner margin. The white shape roughly resembles an ink blot, but in reverse.

From the source: "This image emphasizes the architectural styles of the Victorian Era in a space that was designed and created to control human action. The East Wing, opened in 1864, was inspired by philosopher Jeremy Pentham's "Panopticon" design, which allowed for guards to have 180 or 270 degree views from any position within the wing. Views given to prisoners, however, were tortuous. The individual cells each held one prisoner and contained a single window too high up to see out of and a small peephole on the door which could only be opened by guards looking in."

Gustave Doré (1832-1883), “Liberty” (c. 1865-75), brush and brown wash and gray and white gouache with graphite, 32.9 x 46.5 cm. Always interesting to see Doré’s direct mark-making as opposed to Doré through the filter of a master engraver.
