TW: cult torture. I don't think most people realize how hard it is to get safe from cult torture. It took me most of my life, even though I disclosed child sexual abuse at age 13 with a great uncle, I couldn't tell the authorities that my parents were torturing me and other people because I was living with my abusers and they killed kids in front of me and threatened to kill me and I knew they could and would. And then there's all the dissociation and the stuffing down of memories, and all the mind control messages put in there through torture to not remember and to not tell. When I remembered them and what they were doing to me I ran away from home, but they found me and brought me back over and over and over and would torture me at night. I wish that I'd had more support and people who were trauma informed and cult informed who could help, but it can be hard to even have people hear us and believe us. I had to work so hard on inner communication and inner cooperation, to have everyone inside tell me who they remembered were our abusers, cut off contact , and work on the mind control messages. Tamara was a new mom seeking connection and community in a scary world where simplicity was romanticized. She was introduced to the Twelve Tribes by a family member and after some love bombing on some overnight trips, she was hooked. She convinced her husband to sell all they owned including their home and even clothes to leave society and move their family into a single bedroom in a communal TT home. Her son Emmet was less than 2 years old and he would come to live a difficult life in the strict boundaries of the cult.
