I cover the Milwaukee Brewers for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel — and can't stop my own debilitating usage of em dashes.

The first thing I’ve eaten today was the Dodger Dog I just absolutely housed.

MILWAUKEE — In a fitting metaphor for the night’s proceedings, I was nearly trampled by the police escort for the team bus exiting the ballpark.

The Brewers have 1 at-bat with a runner in scoring position this series. Don't have where that stands in baseball history handy, but can't imagine there are many 2-game stretches where a team only had 1 AB with RISP.

They also only have 4 over their last 3 games combined.

Pat Murphy on Christian Yelich, who's 0 for his last 17 with 11 groundouts: "He's getting pitched really, really tough. They're very aware of his abilities...That's a really small sample size. I know it's critical because it's now, but I'm not worried that Yeli won't respond."

Pat Murphy: “You guys might have counted us out…this team has been counted out. It has fight left in them.”

Final: Dodgers 5, Brewers 1

A night after Blake Snell pitched one of the most dominant playoff games you'll see, Yoshinobu Yamamoto goes the distance. It wasn't as close as the final indicates. The Brewers need 2 of 3 in LA for this to not be the final home game of 2025.

In the Brewers' previous 283 games entering the NLCS, only twice did an opposing starter get through 8 innings.

It's happened twice through two games this series.

Me, a human being who watched in person as the Dodgers literally go 0-6 against the Brewers this year: "How do they ever lose"
cyrthogg.bsky.social
Shohei Ohtani is good, turns out. An RBI single through the drawn-in infield makes it 4-1.

With the way the offense has fared against Dodgers starters this series, it's looking like some serious work may need to be done in SoCal this week.

One pitch away from getting through six innings for the first time in his playoff career, Freddy Peralta gives up a solo homer to Max Muncy. It is 3-1. His day is done. Here comes Abner Uribe, again.
cyrthogg.bsky.social
Abner Uribe, a night after his sinker was sitting 95-97 mph, is up in the Brewers bullpen. He got six outs on Saturday, too.

Since his double to lead off Game 3 of the NLDS, Christian Yelich is 0 for 15.

Alright:

-The defense has been good
-They are hitting some homers this postseason
-The weather here is still wonderful for early-to-mid fall
-Peanut butter M&Ms remain elite

My Brewers peeps, I promise I will follow this up with something encouraging.

A night after not being able to force Snell to work, the offense has only made Yamamoto throw 33 pitches through 3. The offense predicated on Making You Work is not doing enough to get to the LA bullpen.

Outside of a two-hit Game 2 of the NLDS against the Cubs, Joey Ortiz is 0 for 23 in his postseason career.
cyrthogg.bsky.social
Looks like the plan against Yamamoto was to be aggressive early. He definitely countered in that second inning and got hitters more where he wanted them by going strike-to-ball early in counts.

@cyrthogg.bsky.social Why are we not taking pitches right now? We are usually patient and we know the Dodgers bullpen is bad if we can get there
cyrthogg.bsky.social
Since Caleb Durbin's RBI single in the second inning of Game 1 of the NLDS, the Brewers are just 5 for 25 with RISP. That is not very many at-bats with ducks on the pond.
cyrthogg.bsky.social
The Dodgers have the lead as Freddy Peralta falters against the bottom of the order, allowing a two-strike single and a RBI double to Andy Pages. He's already at 42 pitches, too.

Staked to an early lead, Peralta immediately gives it back.
cyrthogg.bsky.social
Teoscar Hernandez gets it back. Freddy Peralta hangs a 3-2 curveball and he sails it high and deep to the left field bleachers.

I will never not be amazed at Jackson Chourio's ability to take velocity on the inner third and rip it out to the opposite field. Not many guys in the league that can do that. He's one.
cyrthogg.bsky.social
Jackson Chourio is now tied for the Brewers career postseason home run record. He is 21 years old.

Fastball Freddy seems to have made the adjustment tonight. Aside from clearly wanting to attack Freddie Freeman with heat, he's been very breaking ball heavy against the top of this lineup.
cyrthogg.bsky.social
Eric Thames just ripped his shirt off and waved it around like a rally towel. It is time for Game 2.
cyrthogg.bsky.social
Jake Bauers is in the lineup and in the outfield tonight.
cyrthogg.bsky.social
Jake Bauers is on the pregame podium this afternoon, so congrats to Jake Bauers on being in tonight’s lineup.
