What exactly is an “America First” foreign policy? Is it a form of realism, or something darker?

In a new piece for @newlinesmag.bsky.social I look under the hood and examine the contradictions and confusions that have bedeviled the doctrine for the past century.

The ‘America First’ Masquerade
Though packaged as a kind of foreign policy realism, the doctrine guiding the Trump administration is riddled with contradictions

"There just isn’t enough time. There’s only what we manage to make of it—what we build, what we protect, what we remember to carry to the car. The gas mask. The snacks. The question we forgot to ask. The name of the person taken." My latest.

As y'all have probably heard, there has been a lot of ICE activity on the North Side of Chicago today. At least four people were kidnapped by ICE in the Rogers Park neighborhood. Folks mobilized throughout the day to do ICE Watch and Rapid Response work.

I feel like this photo of masked, armed men pepper spraying a pastor protecting his community is going to be a defining picture of this moment in America for a long, long time.

As Chicago braces for possible deployment of federal troops, ICE agents conducted a high-profile raid on a residential building.

Chicagoans have not “heard any justification or rationalization for why it was that they needed this kind of overwhelming force,” says Ed Yohnka with ACLU Illinois.

I struggle to think of an editorial board that's been more overtly racist and genocidal that the NY Times one.

This is on the level of Putinist bullshit about denazifying Ukraine.
NYT editorial board calls for deradicalizing the surviving Palestinians in Gaza The multinational authority should have an ambitious agenda. It would span the restoration of basic services, the feeding of the population, the reconstruction of neighborhoods and the creation of a police force. Crucially, as experts at the Wilson Center in Washington have argued, this authority should create a program in schools, the media and elsewhere "to remove Hamas's pervasive radicalizing influence over Gazan society." Another task would be disarming any Hamas fighters who keep fighting. Qatar, given its longtime relationship with Hamas, can help pressure the group, much as the United States can pressure Israel. There are historical antecedents for an international mission along these lines. Deradicalization programs succeeded in Germany and Japan after World War II, and multinational police forces have operated in Bosnia, Kosovo, Haiti and elsewhere. Of course, these efforts come with dangers. Participating countries would risk having their personnel become targets for Hamas.

Do these people think Palestinians have grievances because an islamist group told them so? So palestinian grievances have nothing to do with the camps and the displacement and the bombardment and the no political rights thing? Huh, how interesting 🤔
