MIT rejects "compact" proposed by the Trump administration.
MIT prez wrote: it "would restrict freedom of expression and our independence as an institution" and "is inconsistent with our core belief that scientific funding should be based on scientific merit alone."

You cannot force 'history' to like you. Most world leaders learn this late in their careers, or never.

If Trump had won the prize, the main effect would have been to diminish the honour and value of it. The committee which awards the peace prize understands that better than most.

Sometimes I drag writing out of myself like one paragraph at a time. If I'm happy with even two or three of those by the end of a writing day, then I'm happy enough overall.

And one of them even made it to trade paperback distribution!

The Lancaster move only makes "sense" if their 1 in 4/5 thing is purely about "resizing" the whole operation and had nothing to do with in-year deficits (not a strong case for these things). They will never admit any connection and it'll be four-finger pointing and slide decks all the way down.

Politicians just need to admit to themselves the utterly obvious: a nation's universities are part and parcel of its public structure, whether or not they are run as public goods, they simply are one.

Sure it gets around the visa issue, congrats we're all capable of seeing that far.
But they are almost always a mistake, and usually a very costly one. In the current fiscal climate in UK HE I think even the "richer" universities putting eggs in this particular basket is a massive mistake for them.

Hugely expensive to start up, satellite campuses then tend to trundle along for say 5 or 10 years before running face first into political winds, policy change, or the shifting priorities of a new leadership team at home base. The deals required to get staff to up stakes and go = also huge.

"Global Britain" confirms that its actual message to the globe is "We want your money, we don't want you."

In case you were wondering, Mark Bray and his family found their plane reservations mysteriously cancelled *after successfully checking their bags and going through security* and are planning to try to leave the US again tonight.

In case you were wondering, Mark Bray, who wrote a book about anti-fascism, got death threats from MAGA, and is fleeing to Spain with his wife and young children - yeah, he's Jewish.

I'm honoured to have been elected one of three incoming @royalhistsoc.org council members for a three year term. The Society does an immense amount of good for historians in the UK and beyond and I am flattered I get a chance to play a part in that work.
