Ten Tigers hitters batted at least 10 times in the postseason. Nine of them averaged at least one strikeout per game.

The only exception? Javier Báez only struck out three times in eight games.

In eight playoff games, the Tigers hit .207/.281/.317 and averaged 3.6 runs per game.

The pitching staff had a 2.91 ERA with 82 strikeouts in 77 2/3 innings. How much more can you ask?

Tigers pitching struck out 20 hitters - the most in postseason history - with five unintentional walks. Tigers hitters struck out 17 times with two unintentional walks.

Kerry Carpenter went 4-5. The rest of the offense went 4-47. Torres, Greene, Torkelson and Keith went 0-23 with 10 strikeouts.

The offense failed them again when they needed it the most.

It's a tie game in the eighth, and he lost one of his bench hitters.

Dan Wilson burns Dominic Canzone way too easily.

Early for 2013-14, but he was pitching 30 innings a season more than Skubal.

I've covered the Tigers for 36 seasons, which means I've gotten to cover three Hall of Fame starting pitchers in Detroit.

Tarik Skubal is at a level Jack Morris never approached. He's close to JV and Max at their best, but they threw more innings.

The starters in this game have allowed two runs on five hits and zero walks with 19 strikeouts in 11 innings.

A.J. Hinch had Kerry Carpenter hitting leadoff for one reason - he knew it would limit George Kirby to 18 hitters.

Carpenter is 7-13 with five homers against Kirby. Dan Wilson was never going to let him hit there, which meant Gabe Speier was coming in. That at-bat was set up long before the game.

Kerry Carpenter is 3-3 tonight. The rest of the lineup is 1-18 with seven strikeouts and no walks.

Kerry Carpenter. Rinse. Repeat.

George Kirby certainly deserves this ovation. He leaves with the lead on a night where Tarik Skubal is pitching a masterpiece.

Skubal sets the MLB postseason record with seven straight strikeouts. I can't even imagine his next contract - 7 years/$500 million?

The mood at LCA is the same as the mood across the street going into the bottom of the ninth on Tuesday.

We'll see if the Red Wings can make something happen here and build on it for Saturday.

Big ovation as the Red Wings pay tribute to the late Ken Dryden.

(My first Halloween costume? Ken Dryden.)

My dad was bedridden for much of his early life. His main sources of entertainment were listening to the Packers on Milwaukee radio and the Canadiens on Hockey Night in Canada.

This month marks 20 years since he passed away, but covering the Packers or Canadiens will always be special.

As always, Monica Notaro does a bilingual Canadian national anthem for a Red Wings-Canadiens game.

From 1923-62, they never went more than four years without a World Series title. The longest drought since Ruth arrived is 18 years - 1978-96.
davehogg.bsky.social
In 1919, things changed a little. They went 80-59 and were only 7.5 games behind the Black Sox.

In 1920, Babe Ruth arrived. They didn't win that year, but they won their first pennant in 1921. They won five more in the decade, including World Series victories in 1923, 1926 and 1927.
davehogg.bsky.social
They had a couple good early seasons - close seconds to Boston in 1904 and Chicago in 1906 - but from 1907-18, they finished at least 11 games out of first in every season.

1908: 51-103, 39.5 GB
1912: 50-102, 55 GB
1913: 57-94, 38 GB
1914: 70-84, 30 GB
1915: 69-83, 32.5 GB

Let me tell you about the Yankees before Babe Ruth, when winning a World Series was a wild fantasy.

The current Yankees franchise started in Baltimore in 1901. After two bizarre years, the Orioles (yep) went out of business and the franchise was transferred to New York.
timbhealey.bsky.social
This is the first time in Yankees history that they have won just one World Series in a quarter-century.

What’s the word where you’re from that, when pronounced exactly as it looks, identifies a tourist immediately?

Prime time for the east coast. It's still a 5:08 game in Seattle.
davehogg.bsky.social
Yes. I was thinking Seattle was 1 because they were playing the Tigers, but they were seeded to get Cleveland.

The scheduling is still ridiculous.
