Happy October everyone. My #horror #audiobook The Tower is shelved as middle grade, but it’s no more a kids-only book than Lord of the Flies.

It's horror for anyone who’s ever felt trapped by a system that feeds on them.

It's my one-month-a-versary of starting my 10,000 word novelette that is now over 15,000 words and not stopping. With every word I type, I feel like I'm burning another potential story market to the ground. Not enough places to send longer works. Which is odd in the digital age--no printing costs!

Oh. I'm sorry. You don't deserve that.

I love that you had that in your back pocket.

LOL the original poster has blocked me. Which is fine. Even though they were judgy about Ray Bradbury, at least they took his advice, picked up their toys and went home.

But for context, they referred to Bradbury's work as "breathless sentimental slop."

I am so tired of people equating "edge" with "good" writing, and people implying I can't be a serious writer because of the things I love. Bradbury himself inoculated himself early against such foolishness. Love what you love. Write what you love. Tell everyone else to fuck the fuck off.
“Friends made fun. I tore up the Buck Rogers strips. For a month I walked through my fourth-grade classes, stunned and empty. One day I burst into tears, wondering what devastation had happened to me. The answer was: Buck Rogers. He was gone, and life simply wasn’t worth living. The next thought was: Those are not my friends, the ones who got me to tear the strips apart and so tear my own life down the middle; they are my enemies.
I went back to collecting Buck Rogers. My life has been happy ever since. For that was the beginning of my writing science fiction. Since then, I have never listened to anyone who criticized my taste in space travel, sideshows or gorillas. When this occurs, I pack up my dinosaurs and leave the room.”

Ray Bradbury. “Zen in the Art of Writing.”

It's not what we have become, it's what has been revealed. ICE agents didn't suddenly poof into existence yesterday. Those dragon teeth were planted long ago and carefully cultivated for generations. Not new. Only their hoods have changed.

CHICAGO — Outside an elementary school during dismissal… horrifying. What have we become?

We all know this is the endgame but Dems have been too cowardly to say it. We are flat out in the middle of a fascist takeover but everyone wants to wait until the boot is on their own neck (as opposed to trans or brown people) to admit it.

And even then...

Pritzker: "He wants to militarize major cities because he wants us to get used to the idea of troops on the streets. I believe he's gonna post people outside of polling places and if he needs to in order to control those elections, he'll assume control of the ballot boxes & count the votes himself"

How does a pretty boy, mama's son, runner in the night
Wrapped in shadows and sunglasses protect him from the sunlight
And hungry for his brother's blood just a little bite
Become a fighter and a killer of vampires on sight

My novelette is being very mean to me right now.

I am suspicious of glowing author photos. Can't relate. You're a writer? I want to see you in a tatty bathrobe, baggy-eyed, permanently bed-headed and clutching a barrel of coffee to your breast like it was your last friend on Earth.

And finally a reminder: If you are nominating for SFWA or HWA awards next season, I have free review copies of The Tower available. Just DM.

The Tower is about fear that keeps people compliant. A structure that rewards complacency. It's about systems that chew up the gentle ones first. And it's about a different kind of boy whose power isn't magic or being demigod. It's empathy—and empathy terrifies the machine.

When I was a kid, “books for kids” or "juvenile" books were mostly issue books or history lessons. I tapped out and skipped straight to Stephen King.

Middle grade is marketing label, not a boundary. There's no barbed wire around the MG section in the bookstore. The story decides who it’s for.

You don't know me. You don't know what I've been through. Don't presume unless you too have tried to tape a song off the radio without the DJ blabbing over the intro or fading too quickly into the next song.

Wow. I clicked all the way back through the quote posts and he's such a smug little pedant. Quibbling about the technical definition of fascism tells me one thing: we don't need to quibble about the meaning of "privilege" because he embodies it.
