They are the same in terms of open play creation. The moment that changes they’ll absolutely walk this league IMO. Right now, others have hope.

It was a huge issue last season and they’re basically mid table for open play xG again this season. How can you say that’s a small sample size?
davidlynchlfc.co.uk
I’m saying Liverpool have problems. You’re just ignoring Arsenal’s because you wish they didn’t exist.

Fair enough mate but the owners of Brentford and Brighton are wealthy because of these numbers, and their football clubs punch well above their weight because of it. I’d take that as strong evidence it works but each to their own.
davidlynchlfc.co.uk
But you’d both probably agree that “he should’ve scored that” from time to time. xG is just a measure of that feeling that you can use. It’s not everything, but it’s helpful.
davidlynchlfc.co.uk
They dry up from time to time though, it happened last season. And it happened at Anfield already this year - you had no route to goal once the corners were defended well.
davidlynchlfc.co.uk
Exactly. All three teams have flaws.

You may well have heard this week that Liverpool have major issues. But Manchester City's second top scorer in the league is own goal, and Arsenal are creating less than one expected goal per game from open play. For that reason, there's a title race on.

Disjointed pressing, build-up issues, and a fixture schedule statistic that may surprise you. A look at how Arne Slot can get Liverpool back on track after the international break.

How can Arne Slot fix Liverpool?
Liverpool are well-placed in the Premier League, but have clear issues to solve when they return from the international break.

I don't really do result-driven analysis - in fact it's why my take on the Palace second half got me hammered! But tonight I thought they completely lost their way and it descended into really poor against an opponent they really should be beating.
davidlynchlfc.co.uk
For me, Liverpool have been getting a bit too much flak for their performances this season when they've been good enough in patches to beat some very good teams. But there wasn't a single redeeming feature tonight and it's a deserved defeat that gives Slot a lot to think about.
davidlynchlfc.co.uk
Just go back and read my initial post. There’s just absolutely nothing wrong with saying I felt they were going to earn a deserved point until they threw it away with the very last kick (and thus deserved to lose). People only pick holes in these points post-match because they’re annoyed.
davidlynchlfc.co.uk
Liverpool had six big chances and around 1.9xG. The whole premise of my post was that, up until Nketiah’s chance (0.5), Liverpool had done enough second half to earn a draw. Given it was level on xG and big chances before Nketiah scores, I think I was right!

It's fair to ask whether it's sustainable for Arsenal to have scored just four of their 12 Premier League goals so far this season from open play. But that doesn't give Liverpool a pass to be quite as bad as scoring one set-piece and conceding from four.

Liverpool handing Arsenal advantage with set-piece struggles
The Reds' weakness in set-pieces relative to their rivals was underlined again as the Premier League title race shifted over the weekend.

They created different types of chances because they’re countering vs a high line. But Salah poking Szoboszlai’s goalbound shot over the bar, Isak heading over, the one he passed wide, Wirtz - these are huge chances.
davidlynchlfc.co.uk
But then you get hammered for pointing that out and people suggesting I’m going too easy on one of the best football teams in the world. If I go in too hard after rare defeats I would look utterly stupid come the end of the season. I save the major criticism for when it’s merited.
davidlynchlfc.co.uk
The thing is, I don’t go into this thinking I need to keep people grounded etc. It’s just that the club I cover are the champions and top of the league - they very rarely deserve the OTT criticism you see on here. Even in games they lose they have very good periods, like yesterday.
davidlynchlfc.co.uk
Why is the first half more important than the second? It’s kettling my head now having people say the same thing over and over.
davidlynchlfc.co.uk
I don't know how you can see the chances Liverpool spurned in the second half and say they created very little. I just fundamentally disagree with that assessment.

A look at what went wrong for Liverpool today, including Arne Slot's selection and set-piece woes. Also a nod to the positives, such as that they are still top of the league with Selhurst Park out of the way!

Did you shut your eyes in the second half?
davidlynchlfc.co.uk
Yes, but Palace could've easily conceded four second half. You don't get more for goals in the first half.
davidlynchlfc.co.uk
Thought Liverpool were going to earn a fully deserved point there for a much-improved second-half performance, but it's such poor defending at the end and you leave yourself open to that if you completely give away 45 minutes of the game.
