Gambling industry holding UK govt to ransom.

William Hill joins Ladbrokes and Coral to warn Chancellor - increase tax and we will shut shops.

Happy to dodge taxes; not bear cost of harms inflicted on gambling addicts and their families.

Who governs - govts or corporations?
William Hill owner says it could shut shops if Reeves raises gambling taxes
Evoke considering the plans before expected tax increases in budget, with up to 1,500 jobs potentially affected

I believe this is why it was set up jn part, people worried about labour nationalising without compensation..

I mean you could try and legislate for councils to be able to buy houses back at the price they sold them but uhhh I think that's against the ECHR
deargodwhatnow.bsky.social
(Yes this is how the free market works, it's now fashionable for councils to 'buy back' social housing and this is supposedly a good use of money)

In 2014, Hackney Council sold a property under Right to Buy for £95,050

In 2021, they bought it back off the ex-tenant for £365k

In ~6 yrs, the council lost £269,950 on a single property

It's not an isolated example. @bigissue.com has uncovered 100+ 'Yo-yo Homes'

Side note: there's also a fair amount of bad radio plays whose producers apparently haven't realised that you can't just have actors read out a play transcript. Different mediums!

My point really is that clinging to notions that this is all Foreign and an Invasion, is a comfort blanket. Its not a response!
deargodwhatnow.bsky.social
Also the whole thing here is nonsense. There's blond blue eyed Syrians, Palestinians, Lebanese etc etc. The whole Mossad spy business wouldn't work if race was real and the Jews magically looked different to the rest of the levant

Very funny to watch people wilfully misinterpret Arieh and accuse him of being a nazi. I blame the lack of phonics in US schools

This joke is funny because it's saying Israelis are fake, rootless people who steal all their culture, see? Not a real ethnicity whose material culture is rooted in their blood and soil. No, some kind of sub-people.

This meme was heavily pushed by an influencer who claims Israel killed Charlie Kirk

And at the same time he knew exactly with whom he was allying, and it wasn't the Oxford dons

Yes they're accepting American money but those lawyers working on cases aren't from New York...
deargodwhatnow.bsky.social
Again, this is pretending it's just an 'american import' rather than recognise that there's always been highly organised energetic evangelicals in the UK

What policy themed visitor trail would you do upon retirement? I would pilgrimage to visit the 100 Rishi Sunak outdoor chess sets around the country. I genuinely think it would be one of those fun random things that would take me to places I’d never otherwise go to

I believe Libby Squire's murderer was reported several times for voyeurism and theft of sex toys and nothing was done because it wasn't seen as serious. Then he murdered her

Have you noticed, incidentally, that Romania’s victory over Austria, keeping themselves in contention for a top two place in that group, has given San Marino an incentive to throw their final match against Romania? If Romania finish second, that frees up a Nations League play-off place for Marino.

Relatedly: really quite weird that Farage nearly died in a terrible plane crash in 2010. I think Britain would have been very different and he would have been an interesting anecdote ('insurgent outsider led opposition to EU migration in the 2000s') rather than transformative

It's a lesson everyone who wasn't alive in the 70s has had to (re)learn, is that inflation is just really really unpopular.

It's destabilising, noticeable and extremely aggravating. Just undeniable
convolutedname.bsky.social
No inflation was actually high and once prices are up and interest rates are up people simply do not appreciate prices rising less steep.
deargodwhatnow.bsky.social
Relatedly actually, I think they convinced themselves the public hate lawyers? And while that's probably true to solicitors (ask anyone who's bought a house), Barristers are actually quite impressive? They have wigs and everything
