I remember a VHS tape that had that and other cutting edge snippets of CG animation. Mostly tech demos, animation tests, logos, and a commercial or two.

Said rules including how to use CG (namely for things that COULDN'T be done any other way while using every special effects trick when they could) that would later be carved into stone by the one-two punch of T2 and JP making this method a standard and wildly profitable.

To be fair, TRON came out at a time when computers still kinda terrified the average moviegoer. The movie clearly demonstrates the difference between Users and Programs in a way to help audiences understand it not perfectly, but better, helping take the thorns off that fear of computers.
