I have to imagine the situation with terminology among Romani is similar. For those of us outside those communities, we should still avoid using certain terms.

Some Native Americans use the term, butothers strongly object to the term. Still others are comfortable using the term within their community but still object to outsiders using the term.

I think here part of it is subject matter - whether someone is rigid about behavior in a way that is in step with societal rules and comes across as conformity, or whether the rigidity comes across as an expression of individuality
