If we want a functioning democracy, along with empowering people to use their voices for change, we must teach the critical and creative thinking necessary to be consumers and creators of arguments.

In a democracy, the idea is that arguments are meant to be used for logic-based persuasion so that the polis can govern itself to address concerns and solve problems.

But with ragebaiting, this public discourse is turned into a source of entertainment until people don't want to participate anymore.

Yesterday in class, discussion persuasion and arguments, a student asked why Americans aren't good at arguments because they rely too often on logical fallacies.

My reflection was that online trolls for ragebaiting purposes have turned arguments into entertainment.
