I am seeing some AI-generated Liberal boomer memes in my feed and I’m feeling guilty about blocking those users.

But not too guilty! I don’t care if you’re a 70-year-old Facebook grandma: don’t use the tools of the fucking enemy.

Yeah, I throw out commitment to hard continuity when things get as wild as they do in this movie! Juliet Eng is an attractive Hammer girl, and she has chemistry with David Chiang.

Horror is a genre that can hold a lot of things inside it. Giant atomic monsters, terrifying folk legends, Victorian era patchwork men, unkillable masked murderers, and, if you’re in the right mood, even kung fu vampire killers. Follow the #Hauntalong for even more horror goodies…if you dare!

An unexpected team-up can also reinvigorate a story. Whether it’s Frankenstein and The Wolf Man or the game’s big bad and the party’s scapegoat: there’s power in pairing the unexpected. Watching the movie last night, I kept thinking about a Hearts of Wulin/Trophy mash-up. I'd love to play that.

As uneven as the film is, it's also fun and strange if you embrace it. In games, embracing the strange can lead to some surprisingly memorable moments. A side character who’s there for exposition might become the group's favourite NPC. Instead of leading them away, see where their interest leads.
Peter Cushing holding a torch. God, he's just the coolest.

The fight scenes were directed (uncredited) by the legendary Chang Cheh, and they’re fun showcases for the Hong Kong actors, especially Chiang and Shih Szu as Mai Kwei, Ching's little sister. Watching them kick ass intercut with Cushing swinging a flaming torch is delicious cognitive dissonance.

One of the movie’s shining gems is Peter Cushing. The man is a consummate professional, and in his last outing as Van Helsing he shines just as bright as his first time, plus he has great chemistry with co-star David Chiang (Hsi Ching). Plus he cuts a dashing figure in his dandy adventurer’s outfit.
Peter Cushing as Van Helsing comforts a distraught Julie Ege as Vanessa Buren and a horse in the midst of (off-screen) kung fu action.

I’m not going to pretend the film is perfect; it’s uneven and suffers occasionally from a low budget. (One of my favourite goofs is when a character takes an arrow in the neck, and you can see the prosthesis fall off as he tumbles downhill.) But if you embrace the shlock you’ll be richly rewarded.
One of the aforementioned 7 Golden Vampires; his golden mask hides a grotesque grey face and his mouth is dripping blood.

With help from a wealthy widow, they make an expedition to the vampire’s lair, all the time unaware of Dracula’s involvement. There’s kung fu fights, vampires on horses, skipping skeletons, plus two staples of Hammer and Shaw movies: gratuitous female nudity and gallons of bright red blood.
Hsi-Ching and his siblings prepare to fight an army of golden-masked vampires (just off-screen).

A century later, Professor Abraham Van Helsing is guest lecturing in Hong Kong. He’s really there to discover more about the legend and find people who will help him rid the village of these vampire threats. He meets Hsi Ching, whose family has been trained in martial arts to defeat the vampires.
David Chiang as Hsi-Ching and Peter Cushing as Abraham Van Helsing. Whatever they're looking at, Hsi-Ching seems incredulous and Van Helsing seems disappointed.

When these studios came together, they made a movie where Count Dracula takes over the body of a Chinese acolyte named Kah in order to escape his castle prison and reinvigorate a group of Hong Kong vampires who wear golden masks and bat medallions, and repeatedly terrorize a local farming village.
John Forbes-Robinson as Dracula and Chan Shen as Kah. Dracula seems very excited to take over Kah's body.

Hong Kong’s Shaw Brothers made a variety of movies including period romances and musicals, but are mostly known in the West for their wuxia and kung fu films such as The One-Armed Swordsman and The 36th Chamber of Shaolin.

The movie is a co-production of two iconic movie studios founded in the 1950s. England’s Hammer Film Productions rose to prominence by remaking Universal horror movies such as Dracula and Frankenstein, creating movies with a signature tone of bloody horror, sex appeal, and occasional cheesiness.

Poster for THE HORROR OF DRACULA (1958) starring Peter Cushing as Van Helsing and Christopher Lee as Dracula. It’s my turn up to “bat” for this year’s #Hauntalong and since it’s my first year I figured I’d come out swinging. Are you prepared for the combination of Dracula and kung fu that is…The Legend of the 7 Golden Vampires?

(Is anyone?)

The new NORTH BY NORTHWEST funko unfortunately lacks a plane to chase poor Roger Thornhill around so some creative liberties must be taken.
Snoopy is after Roger Thornhill. Huzzah!

THE CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON is an all-time horror classic and Wes gets it.

It's my second (of many) entries for #hauntalong this year and I'm surfacing one of my favorites of the Universal Monster movies for the morning crowd!

Today I present you:

Sometimes you are entranced by the beautifully mundane, and often you are punished for attempting to understand it. It can be allegorical for the trans experience, for foster care and homelessness, etc. It's the most human to relate to the monstrous, & I believe more games should lean into it.

Trans rights are civil rights. If you aren't willing to die on the hill of trans rights, then you aren't willing to die on the hill of Black rights. Of Jewish rights. Of disabled rights. Of gay rights. Of anyone's rights. Human rights.

I hate to say it but the majority of the country is not going to die on the hill of trans rights. We can’t protect ANY groups if we can’t win a national election, so purity tests only serve to make specific groups feel triumphant. That’s not “erasing” them; it’s long-horizon strategy.
