I've written a new piece on Eddington and its blackly comical depiction of political ideology, polarisation, and violence in contemporary America. A few reflections on the film... 🧵

Eddington
This portrayal of a small New Mexico town at the outset of the pandemic meditates on how individual self-interest, ambition, and resentments fuel political ideology, polarisation, and violence.

I like how the news will be like “while the President claiming Portland was ruled by a giant skeleton named Mr Nibbles is not strictly true, it does speak to the anxiety of many Americans”

There’s this old boy I sometimes see around who’s the spit of my late grandad, and always heading into my grandad’s spiritual home: the bookies. What makes it even uncannier is the bookies is three doors down from a phone shop run by a bloke who is the spit of my cousin. Like some weird fever dream.

Not disagreeing with OP’s critique or conflating it with Labour’s position here at all btw; just that I think amid the gotcha-ing and counter-gotcha-ing on the broad left British politics is an inability to accept and articulate the big picture on this.

…is Labour’s position of unequivocal support for that same institution and for Ukraine’s war effort but a reluctance to concede those same material and ideological links between rising nationalism here and the equivalent politics in Russia (that it opposes) and elsewhere (that it sometimes doesn’t).

I think this is a fair critique of the Greens’ awkward positioning on this - being willing to recognise and join the dots between Reform and Russian authoritarianism and imperialism but ambivalent towards the (imperfect) principal framework we have for resisting the latter - but the flip side…

Then maybe now would be a good time to clarify your position on the UK's commitment to NATO and its allies.

In particular, whether you still support collective security as currently envisaged by Article V.

I am but the problem is there is probably someone out there who will also make it up but unironically and they now have the technology to do it.

See, I don’t take issue with actual veterans using Armistice Day as an opportunity for a knees up in the 1920s…just their great-grandchildren using it as an opportunities for a knees up about a different war in the 2020s.

There is something striking about what I’d almost call a VE Day-ification of remembrance culture in the past few years. It’s gone from an enforced reverence for the dead and the Armed Forces (underpinned by the family history boom) to just wanting to think of the past as an extended national jolly.

The kind of people who took claims of electoral irregularities in the 2019 Bolivian election seriously enough to equivocate about the runner-up launching a coup.

We rightly criticise the credulity of some Western leftists for seeing everyone in the Americas who opposes US hegemony as a comrade, but there’s a similarly naive kind of liberal who is equally hostile to left and right populism alike and oblivious to legacies of colonialism and economic warfare.
