I love the interviews at the end of Mastermind where they get the contestants to explain their game strategy of "answering the most questions correctly."

What's that about my cables?
Twitter accounts are based in Russia. BlueSky accounts are based in homes with, frankly, too many books, plants, obsolete cables, and pieces of rustic pottery, that could do with a bit of a tidying up, to be honest.

I think the "no Scorpios" thing is kind of burying the lede.

I'm not sure this is *that* much of a dilemma.

I still find it a bit mad that the first episode of Doctor Who aired on Saturday, November 23rd, 1963, the day after JFK's assassination. What a crazy weekend that must have been.

Counterpoint: I also live in a country where, decades ago, an elected leader was shot in the street, and nobody knows who did it (to all intents and purposes who shot JFK is known), and trust in politics is relatively high; if jfk’s murder exposed anything, it was something that was already there.
My first political memory - exactly 62 years ago right now, a 4-year-old boy trying to understand his mom's tears - is still the biggest event in my lifetime. We still (IMO) don't *really* know who killed JFK, but we know the public's trust was shattered. It's a straight line to today's mess

He's Charles Foster Kane-maxxing. He's going Rosebud mode.

Absolutely cannot get over one of the photos Trump posted to Truth Social being this nice one of Mamdani solo in front of the FDR portrait. He's totally smitten.

I wasn't surprised, I just didn't expect it to be Donald Trump himself.

I smell a sitcom!
Reporter: Are you affirming that you think the president is a fascist?

Mamdani: I've spoken about --

Trump: Just say yes, it's easier than explaining.

I think I might start randomly saying, "Where's your breaking point in these dilutions?" in my emails.
Folks, I don’t know how it’s possible, but it gets funnier.

"issuing a correction on a previous order of ours regarding the fascist symbol the swastika, you do not, under any circumstances, "gotta consider it potentially divisive."'

I think these really only work when approached in the fandom spirit of “transformative works.” @benaaronovitch.bsky.social’s novella “Masquerades of Spring” is a case in point for me - it’s got elements of (very good) Jeeves parody, but it’s its own thing. If I want Wodehouse pure I can read him!
I find these cash-grab pastiches particularly pointless in the case of Wodehouse. He wrote 71 novels and 200+ short stories! There's almost certainly some Wodehouse you haven't read yet!

one thing i want to emphasize is these "illiberal" and "postliberal" authoritarians are just thieves and crooks! trump is thief. orban is a thief. putin is the biggest thief of them all.
wrote about the president’s flagrant and destructive corruption in a column that references street fighter, the simpsons, machiavelli, and a host of revolutionary-era americans (gift link)
