I’ve changed my header photo to this one. It shows my father Herbert and his sister Lotte with their parents Fritz and Marta in their Frankfurt apartment before Herbert and Lotte were sent to England on the Kindertransport, and later Fritz and Marta transported to Lodz Ghetto, final fate unknown.

Why are vegans, drivers of electric vehicles, peaceniks etc hated so much by reactionaries? Because their mere existence is a (justified) criticism of the behaviour of those who would prefer just to carry on unthinkingly.

Actually ‘Thinking Economics’ as distinct from ‘Calculating Economics’ would be a good start.
Good to see Rethinking Economics getting some attention! ... its aim is to make economics education “plural, critical, decolonised and historically grounded” rather than “dominated by a single framework presented as ‘neutral’ or ‘objective’” ... #philsci #philsky

Rethinking Economics, the movement changing how the subject is taught
Born of student disquiet after the 2008 crash, the group says it is reshaping economists’ education

Have you seen political philosophy reading lists before 1971? Richard Wollheim’s Paradox in the Theory of Democracy, H.L.A. Hart Are There Any Natural Rights? Bernard Williams Equality. And Rawls Justice as Fairness! Before that T.H. Green and Bosanquet. (This is UK, the US had Dewey.)

David Hume is normally regarded as one of the most stylish writers of the those who wrote philosophy in English (though Hobbes is more quotable). Bagehot, apparently, was not so impressed. And Adam Smith gets a working over too. Great article.

Are they going to have it delivered in sacks, by horse and cart?

Did they get AI to write the press release?
"OpenAI has cut ties with one of its top safety executives, on the grounds of sexual discrimination, after she voiced opposition to the controversial rollout of AI erotica in its ChatGPT product."

good lord, what is happening in there

Very important question! Far from clear.

Yes, truly astonishing.

God almighty. In ten years’ time there will genres of movies, memoirs and novels devoted to the gross cruelty of the Trump Regime, akin to those we now have of Germany in the 1930s. Intensely hoping it stops before we get to the 1940s.

You all know this about the classic Apple computer sound? Just checking because some of you are a little younger than me.

The big question for the Winter Olympics. Who will be this competition’s Eddie the Eagle?

Hahaha!! Neither hope nor expectation here.

Just seen a review of a philosophy book that says it is 128 pages and $200.

Surely not the death penalty. Life imprisonment being forced to attend pronoun awareness classes, online implicit bias training, attentive listening classes, an anger management course, and group hygiene and self-care, each twice a day, every day, would surely be the fitting punishment.

Also many redundancies at The Onion as the Trump Regime becomes increasingly self-sufficient in satire.

No-one seems to have noticed, but many of the core developments in the Mandelson/Epstein story these last few days have been broken on this website. @pickardje.bsky.social and @petergeoghegan.bsky.social are both posting each breaking development on BlueSky, not X.

Still remember being publicly criticised by the then head of REF for writing a column saying that the REF was a form of collective punishment that the university sector imposes on itself. I think the room was with me though.
Scrapping REF should be “serious’ option”, says Manchester VC.

Duncan Ivison questions “usefulness” of “massive, bureaucratic” research assessment exercise.

Right. And where should we cut first? Pension triple lock?

But, but, but … potholes don’t repair themselves …
‘This 19 percentage points gap is much larger than the 5 percentage point difference in 2022 and the 3 percentage point gap in 2010.’

I don’t know why but the US just loves detaining a significant portion of its residents. Once it was mental hospitals (558,922 in 1955). Then prisons. Now as the prison population starts to fall, concentration camps.
Prisons are for people who've been CONVICTED of crimes.

Most people in these warehouses - without proper food or sanitation or worse - haven't even been CHARGED with crimes.

And thousands are CHILDREN.

This will be another of America's greatest shames.

Hahahaha! There should be ‘astonishingly prolific and accomplished writers and artists’.
