I’ve changed my header photo to this one. It shows my father Herbert and his sister Lotte with their parents Fritz and Marta in their Frankfurt apartment before Herbert and Lotte were sent to England on the Kindertransport, and later Fritz and Marta transported to Lodz Ghetto, final fate unknown.

Social trust is the bedrock of a decent society.

Justice must not only not be done, it must also be seen not to be done.

Silicon Valley: Move fast and break things.

Socrates (in a dialogue called Acosta by Iris Murdoch if I recall correctly): In philosophy if you are not moving at a snail’s pace you are not moving at all.

So sad, so sad, so sad. If I say it enough I might believe it.

Trying to puzzle through why the British Royal Family got so close to the two most notorious paedophiles of modern times: Saville and Epstein. Lack of true friends leading to vulnerability exploited by masters of manipulation seeking cover through prestigious links?
New Epstein emails show how former Prince Andrew, and his ex-wife Sarah Ferguson gave Jeffrey Epstein updates on their daughters. Ferguson also took Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie for lunch with Epstein while he was under house arrest.

Now wondering if there’s any bloated plutocrat who feels left out because he’s not in the Epstein files.

Yes, from Equality. I’m re-reading. A lot about unequal education at school age. I don’t recall anything about adult education but will let you know if it appears!

“What matters to a society is less what it owns than what it is and how it uses its possessions.” R.H. Tawney 1931

I hear it’s hard to get grits in Italy.
Not only did they bring a small private army, but among the waste of taxpayer money was BRINGING A FULL PLANE OF FOOD.

To *Italy*.

I didn’t make a mistake, says Trump, you did! (By electing me.)

They seem to remove the leaves themselves!

Lost in the mists of discarded labels unfortunately.

Hellebores still blithely ignoring world events.

Hahaha! It is a novel, I’ll give you that.

“a new kind of boiled sweet which had, embedded in its sugary mass, a raspberry-coloured swastika that literally melted in the mouth.”

From Sebald’s Austerlitz - Czech German border area 1933. Has Trump got his own sweet yet?

Thanks Peter. Both literal and metaphorical, which as you know is a constant theme of mine. If London were to be abandoned by all but, say, those with four English grandparents I'm not sure how many there would be left here.

I pondered on how to phrase it. ‘London has no bedrock’ sounds like we are about to sink. It was explained to me that ‘London’s bedrock is gravel and clay’ - assuming bedrock means ‘supporting layer’ not ‘bed of rock’.

Gordon Brown very good on the BBC this morning. I know he got a lot of criticism as Prime Minister but consider his successors in office.

The Epstein files are turning into one of those accidental historical archives of preserved records like the Oxyrhynchus Papyri Manuscript (fragments from 32BC–640AD found in an Egyptian rubbish dump). But instead of shopping lists, bills and horoscopes it’s the elite manipulating the system.
This is bleak: Jes Staley, currently CEO of Barclays, reassuring Epstein that popular revolt against financial elites is unlikely because capitalism and pop culture have defanged social movements, leaving people more invested in consumption than justice.

Don’t tell me that they are wasting all the money on anti-woke initiatives?

Fantastic!!

The lesson coming from the Trump Regime at the moment is that everyone and everything is disposable, the future doesn’t matter, the past is what we say it was, and all that matters now is power & wealth for elite white men, and worship of the President. And if you object your life will be shredded.

The Washington Post—for which I wrote editorials for nearly a decade—has closed its Kyiv bureau.

@lawfaremedia.org has not—and we will not.

We now employ more people in Kyiv than the Washington Post.

Let me tell you about what we have done in Ukraine over the past year and why we are not leaving
