Seems like a good time to remind ourselves that in 1931, when Mussolini forced academics to sign an oath of allegiance to the fascist regime, only twelve refused.

We spend billions subsidizing the corn/soybean duopoly via crop insurance, direct & conservation payments, R&D at land grants plus pay for ethanol & biodiesel mandates. We ignore their massive environmental impacts. Meanwhile, the majority of US oats is imported (from Canada). Smart AND sustainable!
Some corn and soybean farmers in southern Minnesota and northern Iowa have started planting oats for environmental reasons, but also in an effort to diversify what’s grown in the Midwest. One area farmer has broken ground on a new oat mill in Albert Lea, Minn. for a local market.

Got this email this morning from Springer about a recently published article of mine.
This is completely absurd, particularly since last week I reviewed an article w/ tons of fake references that were obviously AI generated.
There really are no adults in the room, just greedy unethical publishers.
Scientists: have you been the target of an online harassment campaign, doxxing, or weaponized FOIA requests? I'd like to talk to you about steps you had to take to protect your digital security for an upcoming Nature story. (You can be anonymous if necessary.)

RTs appreciated.
Trump: "Despite their size, Secretary Kennedy has formally certified that these are the first ever MAHA turkeys. They could be fat, but they're still MAHA. They've been fattened on a steady diet of grass, beef, to allow the smoothies and all the other things they have been eating for this occasion."

Lol Ben Smith just got Chotinered, he may not have recovered yet by then. And Shapiro's RGGI move was a huge disappointment, even with my low expectations of his leadership.

I am so sorry Laura, this must be very stressful and painful for all of you.

The Daily is the worst NYT product and there’s plenty to choose from.

This happens in part because scientists in the global North do small science like the kind I am disappointed in btw.

“This is the Amazon COP. If it ends with a decision that ignores Indigenous rights and props up offset markets that science says cannot work, it will squander the moral clarity of this moment,” a new op-ed argues.

I cannot even begin to unpack how disappointed I have been that so many colleagues doing research on how to mitigate and adapt to climate change in US agriculture have been squandering their time to produce small science that just parrots and validates industry talking points. Yuck. Yuck. Yuck.
Not doing 💩 science that benefits the fossil fuel lobby and big ag would not hurt too in my field lol

I really do believe that a way we meet the moment as higher ed educators is to ensure students have strong theoretical foundations and a good understanding of history. And they also must appreciate the role of the executive and SCOTUS in dismantling Federal legislation and the science behind it. 2/2

It's pretty much the same for US environmental policy these days. Prof. Saideman explains how he has pivoted in the 🧵.
I've had to do it too. How?
1) teaching the theory of environmental policy mechanisms
2) focus on implementation past and present and distributional impacts. 1/
Why do i bother teaching US foreign policy? No process, no institutions.

Good god, this story!
Bloomberg unfolds the history of the Vance-Dmitriev initiative... Dmitriev put it to Witkoff and Vance in a meeting in Miami, Axios published it, Trump and Rubio knew nothing of it. But then Trump decided to simply bless Dmitriev's draft after the fact. A perfect biopsy of "diplomacy" under Trump.

This was not surprising to me - unfortunately. He was pro oil drilling in his first term as well. And now Brazil is also pushing the production of corn ethanol.

I know there’s much to be appalled about these announcements (and some of it looks pretty illegal to me) but what really gets me is that again GOP politicians are spewing falsehoods about the Clean Water Act and agriculture even after SCOTUS gutted WOTUS.
Ag is pretty much exempt from the CWA. Sigh.
In One Week, Trump Moves to Reshape U.S. Environmental Policy

I am sure there are lots of other examples from other parts of the world, this one just resonates with me because of my personal experiences.

Italy actually has laws making it illegal to do what people here do legally, and often get public money to do again once hurricanes etc. strike. And enforcement is better than it was in Italy. Yet these facts matter little in practice, I see homes worth millions on barrier islands in the US.

I'm still amazed that growing up in Italy all the abusivi (unauthorized) homes too close to beaches, on floodplains, not up to code etc. were seen as evidence that we were not a proper Global North country and in the US they build right on the beach and it's all good and legal and worth millions.

A comprehensive rundown of the #COP30 shenanigans from @roycerk2.bsky.social. From what I saw, the Colombians were the only ones whose negotiators and civil society groups were on the same page, and they carried the whole world on their shoulders.
