You’re right and you should say it

Also something about this one slays me every time

This one has always had a special place in my heart.
Really important to stress that the Crown Jewels of the US higher education system were never the Ivies or elite SLACs (other countries have equivalents of these) but the well-funded, large, cheap, and excellently staffed public state university systems bringing high quality education to the masses.
One of the bragging rights that the US ed system had in the 20th century is that we didn't have education tracks. Essentially, any kid could go to a CC or state school & major in whatever they wanted to (obviously an oversimplification). I fear this aspect of the American dream is dying.

(I very much include my awkward self in this statement.)

The skeleton key for understanding academic conferences is that they are gatherings of 1000+ people, all of whom actively chose a career where they spend most of their time interacting with books and not other people.

Olivia Nuzzi can get a regular-ass office job. Graham Platner can try running for state House. Larry Summers (though I wouldn’t 100% vouch for “not criminal”) can’t be working with students. None of these things are fatal!

Sometimes people do things that are not technically criminal but are disqualifying for the job they want to have. They don’t have to be tarred and feathered but they do have to find a new line of work.

It turns out that all this did, in fact, affect how she covered RFK Jr. We’re not going to memory-hole that, especially now that people are trying to resurrect her career in this particular field.
I have fallen down the rabbithole of 'her remarks about RFK in the NYT's pundit round tables' and....!!!

PSA: you need to get your turkey out of the freezer and into the refrigerator now.
AirBnB CEO calling it “vibe revenue” just 👨‍🍳 😘

The underlying cause of every bubble - debt masquerading as financial innovation - depends on not just short financial memory & speculative neophytism, but reinventing jargon of finance, like how each generation of kids has new ways to say same things.

“Remember the bamboo from Part 1?”

Picture is worth a thousand words and you couldn't pay for copy as good as this

YES

This is a testable claim and I am excited to test it.

A thing about me is that if someone tells me I’ve done a good job I immediately suspect I’ve done an awful job. I also do not like to receive criticism of any kind. Not sure what lanes that leaves other people but I guess that’s not my problem.

This isn’t the Disc Horse Bot? This is something which was posted by a human on purpose?

This is so fucking embarrassing.
ok

My go-to metaphor recently has been the end of The Shawshank Redemption: we are slowly crawling towards something better but we are also currently very much in the shit pipe.

I try to remain optimistic and I do think we will come through this. But the absence of friends and colleagues is a reminder that we’ve not come through it yet.

ASEEES this year is really going to be marked by absences. Between visa denials, foreign scholars deciding they’d rather not be hassled at the border, and Russia designating us an undesirable organization, some panels have simply been gutted.

We are so close to learning what causes people to lose gross and fine motor control when on an airplane or indeed just at the airport. It will be a beautiful day when we do.

He’s publicly so cartoonishly mean and this felt like a window into his quotidian awfulness, I guess.

This shit’s so cool, man

This is the best half of soccer I've ever seen the US men play.

(This was part of a week at dork camp where IIRC the nightly movie choices were, in some order: American Beauty; The Virgin Suicides; Magnolia; American History X; Fight Club. In retrospect we were all Going Through It.)

"Nobody thought Kevin Spacey's character in American Beauty was a weird, desperate pervert."

Yes they did! That's not true! I saw that movie when I was 16 and it was extremely obvious even then!
MAN WHAT?

using kevin spacey for a comparison or example here is definitely… a choice
