I was always told that one of the central lessons of the Shoah is that legal, juridical regimes can still be immoral. The claim that Anne Frank was in Amsterdam "legally" is false, but more than that, the question "Was Anne Frank an illegal?" is so grossly missing the point of Holocaust remembrance.
To avoid the possibility Holocaust remembrance might lead to empathy for migrants, Trump's antisemitism envoy claims Anne Frank "was in Amsterdam legally."

In reality, Margot Frank received a summons to go to a labor camp on July 5, 1942. After ignoring this call, they were in Amsterdam illegally.

It would have been ok to kill Anne if she were an illegal immigrant, or committed fraud (what kind of fraud?), or acted unlawfully (a very squishy word!)

We're now seeing a steady march of Catholic prelates with obvious backing from the Vatican saying hat it's time now to defund and liquidate ICE.

it is incredible that keyboard radicals can look at the martyrdom of people with perfectly conventional politics and imagine themselves the heroes of a struggle which they do nothing but complain about

Everyone who has ever thought “they should have shot every rebel” was right
Again, we've been doing the "just move on an let the criminals retire" thing since at least Iran-Contra, but really since at least 1865, & it never works. We simply cannot do that anymore.
Once again, one of the primary reasons we have arrived at this point (completely out-of-control & unconstitutional abuse of executive power to conduct wildly illegal foreign policy) is that no one, including the most senior people involved, went to jail for the rest of their lives for Iran-Contra.

They have overwhelmed us with “muzzle velocity,” you do have to give that to them. But they also lose track of things constantly because they’re similarly overwhelmed by their own bullshit. When democrats are next in power, what non evil stunts can we do to overwhelm them in a similar fashion?
remember when the U.S. colluded in an internal coup in Venezuela and abducted the president while killing a few dozen people in airstrikes? I think it was a couple of years ago now.

There's another way to look at this. ICE is doing everything the military manual tells you not to do to civilian populations because it creates insurgencies where none existed before.

The people of Minnesota have executed one of the most impressive civil resistance campaigns I can remember:

- Organized a city wide general strike
- Maintained nonviolent discipline amidst violence
- Mobilized 10,000s in subzero temps to protest and watch ICE
- Flipped public opinion against ICE

in general, what i've noticed is that a large amount of the election doomers seem to be from Europe and are completely clueless how the actual US system works
Election doomers should really be required to work a primary election as a precinct election worker so they understand how elections in this country actually work. Attending a canvassing board meeting would be good too.

Of course it doesn’t matter. He was a white dude with a legal firearm. He was 37. Our whole lives we were told that we were allowed to be legally armed as white guys, and that the constitution was clear about it. The point of this murder is that they don’t believe we have rights.
"Why is it so normal for law enforcement — those who are supposed to be keepers of law and order — to kill Americans? And why is the only question at the end of the day how much their victims deserved to die?"

In my view, repression at home and thuggery abroad - most recently Greenland - are two sides of the same coin. Both reflect the worldview of people who think violence, power, threat and coercion are all that's required to push your agenda through & secure your interests.

They are killing the decent people because they themselves are indecent, and the contrast makes them feel bad about themselves
Alex from our time working together, while he was in nursing school. Later, he moved to ICU, working as a nurse to support critically ill Veterans. He had such a great attitude. We’d chat between patients about trying to get in a mountain bike ride together. Will never happen now
