You can be as terrified or nonplussed or unperturbed as you like; the sun will still rise tomorrow & the rent will still be due on the 31st. The world has no romantic narratives for its fate except those we invent, because the world does not die. That is our privilege.
I said it elsewhere, but it’s weirdly exhilarating and addictive to be terrified all the time, and the people addicted to it, when they say this, may as well be saying “I can stop at any time, it’s just the world doing this *to* me.”
One of the reasons i love tolkien is the theme that despair is an enemy

The public Discourse about sexual violence is always about lurid and evil monsters that we feel comfortable fantasizing about doing the worst possible violence towards, and then the reality 90% of the time for survivors is that a loved one hurt them and they have to spend their lives healing.
its also terrible for adult survivors of rape and abuse for essentially the same reason. so much of it is intimate partner violence
As a child protection professional, I can tell you the death penalty is NOT an awesome solution to child sexual abuse. Most children are abused by family members; they will not report if their family members will die as a result.
