Don’t mind me just tracing the gyres. Talk about politics a lot but mostly want to talk about Stevie Wonder and August Wilson. She stay in the hills, he stay in Atlanta, I pay for them both.

I haven’t asked in a while so!

1) What was the last work of art, in any genre or form, that changed your life?

2) When was the last time you changed your mind about anything, big or small, and why?
It’s so funny how “you can go to grad school on that” and “that will preach” are cousins. Like I could go to grad school on “analogy vs chirality” the same way I could preach idk “it’s not about who you love, it’s about who loves you.” In other words it’s all barely dignified poetry.

There are just so many analogies between Israel and white people it just feels so much easier to remove the ontology and call it a structural feature of certain power relations.

Just heard disappointing news that @warren.senate.gov will co-sponsor the Kids Online Safety Act again despite overwhelming opposition from LGBTQ, human rights, abortion rights, and racial justice groups.

This is a horrific betrayal of her constituents, particularly trans youth and their families.

You know I don’t HAVE to read it as “we done ate and y’all the leftovers, we shall use your ghost to power our work” I could read it as “we’ve learned our lessons and we’re woke now we can take it from here.” Which is still bad but it makes a little more space for gradating white intentions.

I bet Trump’s kids had all the toys they wanted. Still do. Jet skis and mansions and parasailing and trips around the world. He thinks he should still have all those things. It’s you that should go without.
Trump: "You can give up certain products. You could give up pencils. Because under the China policy, every child can get 37 pencils. They only need 1 or 2. They don't need that many. You always need steel. You don't need 37 dolls for your daughter. 2 or 3 is nice. So we're doing things right."

BREAKING: Democrats have *flipped* a seat in Georgia's state House tonight.

Democrat Eric Gisler has won the seat, which was previously held by a Republican who resigned this fall.

This is a red territory: Trump won the district by 13% in 2024.

i just reposted this but I really just want to say that the $8/mo I spend on the Handbasket is one of the best investments I've made in indie journalism ever
SCOOP — Gregg Phillips, a conspiracy theorist with no emergency management experience who helped produce the election-denying documentary ‘2000 Mules’ with Dinesh D’Souza and has faced numerous legal inquiries, has been named head of FEMA’s Office of Response and Recovery.

My story:
Conspiracy theorist election denier given FEMA’s second-most important role
Gregg Phillips will lead the Office of Response and Recovery, “the heart of what FEMA does.”

1) it’s your job as a lib in good standing to be patient with these critiques because as we can see, they are often made in bad faith as a cover for despising the project of diversity altogether. Can you blame people for being suspicious?

2) yeah I’m describing what should be, not what is.
Except it was not completely fine. I'm 100% for diversity, and have been critical of some of the specific policies corporations and governments pursued to achieve it (especially "diversity training", which had poor empirical support at best) and have been called a fascist for doing so.
You can say “I don’t think this diversity statement serves our DEI goals, I think it just teaches people how to play the game and say the buzzwords and I don’t think that contributes to scholarship.” Completely fine.

You can’t say “diversity is bullshit, that’s not a good goal.” Fired.

In my head Stevie’s “You and I” goes into “Lately”

In love, you and I…
You and I…
You and I…
You and I…
I’m a man of many wishes
I hope my premonition misses
But what I really feel
My eyes won’t let me hide…

CONFIRMED: Eileen Higgins, a Democrat, will be the new mayor of Miami.

She'll be the city's first Democratic mayor since the 1990s. She flipped the office from Republicans, and does so easily. She leads the DeSantis-endorsed Emilio González 59/41 right now with most ballots counted.
December 10, 2025 at 12:18 AM
This is a good sign.
JUST IN: It appears Democrats will win the mayor's office in Miami.

This would be a flip from GOP.

It's not final yet, but Democrat Eileen Higgins is up 61% to 39% as the first 23K ballots are counted. That's *the majority of votes cast*, & Election Day is no less Democratic today.

More soon!

In all honesty the Bible but as a bit King Hedley II.
omg. Kat Abughazaleh just posted that if she's elected, she'll swear in on a copy of Octavia Butler's Parable of the Sower.

If you were elected to public office (never mind whether you'd ever actually run), what book would you swear in on?

Semiotic disorientation is the story…
tbh part of the new order, i think, is that we’ve never entered a new technological equilibrium, everything solid has just continuously vanished into air. within a single generation empires rose and fell, economies industrialized and de-industrialized, and it shows no signs of stopping

It’s fine. He’ll appoint a stooge in May, the stooge will do one rate cut to which the bond markets will react terribly, Trump’ll get smushed in the midterms anyway, and then the stooge will refuse further rate cuts or maybe even hike.
Bond investors recently told Bessent they don't want Hassett because Hassett will be politically controlled by Trump. But this will be a problem with virtually anyone Trump chooses, since willingness to do what Trump says seems to be sole criterion for the job.
Not sure how you square this circle.
Bond investors have told the US Treasury they are concerned about Kevin Hassett’s potential appointment as Federal Reserve chair, worrying he will cut interest rates aggressively to please President Donald Trump.

The infinite irony, the absolute infinite irony, of being cruel to a stranger by naming the STRANGER a Sodomite. Just absolute full circle moment on how badly American Christians read the book we claim to venerate. Fools.
I’m going to go out on a limb and say it isn’t good that the federal government is calling people “sodomites”

This is incredibly funny ngl.
PIERS: “You’re not gay?”
FUENTES: “No. But women are very difficult to be around.”
P: “Should they vote?”
F: “No.”
PIERS: “They should stay home?”
FUENTES: “Yeah.”
PIERS: “So you’re just a misogynistic dinosaur. Have you ever had sex?”
FUENTES: “No.”
PIERS: “Wow. Says the guy who never got laid.”
